List of aggregates tests

1) Sand equivalent:

Standard used: ASTM D2419 / EN 933

Description: The sand equivalent test quantifies the relative abundance of sand versus clay in soil. The test is used to
qualify aggregates for applications where sand is desirable but fines and dust are not.

Apparatus needed:

3) Specific Gravity and water absorption: (Relative density)

Standard used: Fine aggregates ASTM C128 / BS 812:2, EN 12390-7

Coarse aggregates ASTM C127 / EN 12390-7

Description: specific gravity is the ratio of mass of an aggregate to the mass of a volume of water equal to the volume
of the aggregate particles.

Aggregate absorption is the increase in mass due to water in the pores of the material. Aggregate absorption is a
useful quality because: High values can indicate non-durable aggregate.

Both specific gravity and absorption values are essential to calculate the volume of a concrete mix design.

Apparatus needed:

- Pycnometer jar.

- conical mold and tamper

-Drying cloth

Standard used: ASTM C117

Description: Material finer than the 75-μm (No. 200) sieve can be separated from larger particles much more
efficiently and completely by wet sieving than through the use of dry sieving. Therefore, when accurate
determinations of material finer than 75 μm in fine or coarse aggregate are desired, this test method is used

Standard used: ASTM C566 / BS EN 1097-2008

Description: This test method is sufficiently accurate for usual purposes, such as adjusting batch quantities
of ingredients for concrete. It will generally measure the moisture in the test sample more reliably than the
sample can be made to represent the aggregate supply. In cases where the aggregate itself is altered by
heat, or where more refined measurement is required, the test should be conducted using a ventilated,

Standard used: ASTM D4791 / BS EN 933

Description: The flakiness index is defined as the percentage (by mass) of stones in an aggregate having an

due to their tendency to pack more tightly than cubical aggregates, consequently flaky particles require less

11) Elongation index:

Standard used: ASTM D4791 / BS EN 933

Description: An aggregate is classified as being elongated if it has a length (greatest dimension) of more
than 1.8 of its mean sieve size. The elongation index of an aggregate sample is found by separating the
elongated particles and expressing their mass as a percentage of the mass of the sample tested.

Apparatus needed:

-Length Gauge

- Weighing balance

12) Clay lumps and friable particles:

Standard used: ASTM C142 / BS EN 12620:2002+A1:2008

Description: Friable particles are defined as particles which vary from the basic aggregate particles in that
they may either readily disintegrate under normal handling and mixing pressures imposed upon them by
construction procedures, or break down after being incorporated into the work

Apparatus needed:

-Weighing balance

-Sieves

-Oven

13) Potential Alkali-Silica reactivity:

Standard used: ASTM C1260 / ASTM 1567

Mortar-Bar Method

Description: Alkali–silica reaction takes place between alkalis (Na2O and K2O) from cement or other
sources and certain reactive silica minerals present in the coarse or fine aggregates. The chemical reaction
can result in abnormal expansion and cracking of concrete.

Apparatus needed:

- Alkali Aggregate Reaction Bath

- Alkali Specimens Can, stainless steel

- Two Gang Prism Shrinkage Mould

- Digital Length Comparator

14) Sulfate content:

Standard used: ASTM C88 / BS 812:117

Description: Alkali–silica reaction takes place between alkalis (Na2O and K2O) from cement or other sources and
certain reactive silica minerals present in the coarse or fine aggregates. The chemical reaction can result in abnormal
expansion and cracking of concrete.

Apparatus needed:

- Sulphate test strip, detection range 200 to 1600 mg/l.

- Ion exchange apparatus

Picture:
15) Chloride:

Standard used: BS 1377:3

Description: This method provides a measurement of water-soluble chloride salts present in a soil or aggregate
sample. It is based on the Volhard method.

Apparatus needed:

- Quantab chloride titrator strips

Picture:
16) Soundness of aggregates:

Standard used: ASTM C88

Description: Soundness is the percentage loss of material from an aggregate blend during the sodium or
magnesium sulphate soundness test. This test, which is specified in ASTM C88, estimates the resistance of
aggregate to in-service weathering. It can be performed on both coarse and fine aggregate.

Apparatus needed:

-Sieves

-Weighing balance

-Oven

-Saturated solution of Sodium Sulphate or Magnesium Sulfate.

-Hydrometer

-solution bucket

-washing bucket

-thermometer
