Periodicals are any type of publication that is published in a series, or periodically. Things
like newspapers, magazines, and journals are all periodicals, and the articles inside them are
periodical articles.

Periodical articles are often the best sources for research, especially if your topic requires:

• recent information
• information on a specific topic
• information on local issues

Magazine
A magazine is a periodical aimed at a specific
audience, covering recent issues and specific
subjects through articles, interviews, and
personal narratives. Articles are often written by
professional writers with or without expertise in the
subject and contain "secondary" discussion of
events in shorter articles providing broad overviews
of topics, usually with little documentation (e.g.,
footnotes or bibliography).

Magazines use vocabulary understandable to most


people, and often have lots of eye-catching
illustrations. Appearance of which is glossy, has
colored pictures, and advertisements. Some
examples are Sports Illustrated, Time, and Vogue.

Newspaper
A newspaper is a periodical aimed at the general
public, covering recent issues and news in a formal,
brief, and objective matter. A few examples
are New York Times, Wallstreet Journal, and The
Manila Times.

In general, the purpose of a newspaper is to convey,


as efficiently as possible, current information, or
"news", to a particular audience. What constitutes
"news" depends in part on the intended audience.
Newspapers aimed at a general audience will carry
news about politics, crime, wars, economics--just
about anything that could interest a general reader.
As for the appearance, newspapers usually contain
photos, graphics and charts and many
advertisements.

Journal
An academic journal is a periodical aimed at
scholars, academics, and researchers, usually written in
technical language by experts on the subject. They contain
longer articles providing in-depth analysis of topics, original
research, conclusions based on data, footnotes or endnotes,
and more often than not include an abstract and bibliography.

The appearance is it has dense text, usually with


graphs and charts, and has fewer specialized advertisements.
Many, but not all, academic journals are peer-reviewed. A
few examples are Current Research in Social Psychology,
Environmental Research, and Journal of Open Innovation.
