Nth Term of an Arithmetic Sequence
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d

Where a n is the nth term, a 1 is the first term, n is the number of terms and d is the common
difference.

Soln.
a 1=17, d=−4 , n=20, a 20 =?
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d
a 20=17+ ( 20−1 )(−4 )
a 20=17+ ( 19 ) (−4 )
a 20=17+ (−76 )
a 20=−59
Ex#2. Find the 50 term of the arithmetic sequence 1, 4, 7, 10, …
th

Soln.
a 1=1 ,d =3 , n=50 , a50=?
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d
a 50=1+ ( 50−1 ) ( 3 )
a 50=1+ ( 49 ) ( 3 )
a 50=1+ 147
a 50=148

Arithmetic Means
The term of an arithmetic sequence that are between two given terms are called arithmetic
means.
5, 8, 11, 14, 17

Ex#1. Insert three arithmetic means between 17 and 1.

17, a 2, a 3, a 4, 1
Find
a 2=? , a3 =? , a 4=?
Soln.
a 1=17 , a5=1 , n=5 ,d =? Consider the sequence,
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d 17, a 2, a 3, a 4, 1
a 5=17+ ( 5−1 ) d a 2=17+ (−4 ) =13
1=17+ ( 5−1 ) d a 3=13+ (−4 ) =9
−17+1=( 4 ) d a 4=9+ (−4 )=5
−16=4 d
−16 4 d
= 17 , 13 , 9 ,5 , 1
4 4
−4=d
Or
d=−4

Ex#2. Insert six arithmetic means between 16 and 2.

16 , a2 , a3 , a4 , a5 , a6 , a7 , 2
Find:
a 2=? a 5=?
a 3=? a 6=?
a 4=? a 7=?
Soln.
a 1=16 a 8=2 n=8 d=? Consider the sequence
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d 16 , a2 , a3 , a4 , a5 , a6 , a7 , 2
a 8=16+ ( 8−1 ) d a 2=16+ (−2 ) =14 a 5=10+ (−2 ) =8

Sum of Terms of an Arithmetic sequence

Find the sum of the first ten terms of the arithmetic sequence 4, 10, 16, ….
Soln.
4 + 10 + 16 + 22 + 28 + 34 + 40 + 46 + 52 + 58 = 310

Defined by,
n
Sn=
2
[ 2 a1+ ( n−1 ) d ]
Where
Sn is the sum of the first n terms of an arithmetic sequence.
a 1 is the first term.
n is the number of terms.
d is the common difference.

Ex#1. Find the sum of the first ten terms of the arithmetic sequence 4, 10, 16, ….
