INVERSE

FUNCTION
PREPARED BY: KIM LAMBERT L. CAUBALEJO I, LPT
OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

 Define the inverse of a one-to-one function;

 Determine the inverse of a one-to-one function; and

 Solve for the inverse of a function.

Given the function , examine the table of values.

-4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4

-9 -7 -5 -3 -1 1 3 5 7
Invert the values for and .

- 9 - 7 - 5 - 3 -1 1 3 5 7

-4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4
One-to-One
Function
A relation is one-to-one if and only if each element of its domain corresponds to a unique
element in its range, and each element of its range corresponds to a unique element in its
domain.
Inverse
of Function

An inverse function or an anti function is defined as a function, which can

reverse into another function. In simple words, if any function “f” takes x to
y then, the inverse of “f” will take y to x. If the function is denoted by ‘’ or
‘’, then the inverse function is denoted by or . One should not confuse (-1)
with exponent or reciprocal here.
Steps in Finding the
Inverse of a function

Step#1: Write the function in the form of .

Step#2: Interchange the and variables.

Step#3: Solve for y in terms of .
