LINEAR EQUATIONS
IN ONE VARIABLE
LINEAR EQUATIONS IN
ONE VARIABLE
A linear equation in one variable is an equation in the
form of ax + b = c, where a, b, and c are constants and a ≠ 0.
First Degree Equation.
Example:
3x – 8 = 6
2y = 6

Solution of Equation
A solution of an equation is any value of the variable that
will make the equation true.
Ex:
x+5=9
x=4
y + 18 = 4
y = -14
3a = 36
a = 12
Solving Linear Equations in One
Variable
Ex.
1. x + 4 = 5
x+4=5
x=5–4
x=1
2. x – 12 = 8
x – 12 = 8
x = 8 + 12
x = 20
3. y – 0.03 = 4
y – 0.03 = 4
y = 4 + 0.03
y = 4.03
4. y – 3.4 = 9.61
y – 3.4 = 9.61
y = 9.61 + 3.4
y = 13.01
5.
6.
7. 2x + 6 = 2
2x + 6 = 2

2x = 2 – 6

2x = -4

x = -2
8. 3y + 4 =12
3y + 4 = 12

3y = 12 – 4

3y = 8

y = 8/3
9. 4x + 11 = 23
4x + 11 = 23

4x = 23 – 11

4x = 12

x=3
10. 3x – 2 = 10 – x
3x – 2 = 10 – x

3x + x = 10 + 2

4x = 12

x=3
11. 7x + 4 = 5x – 18
7x + 4 = 5x – 18

7x – 5x = - 18 – 4

2x = - 22

x = -11
12. 3x – 6 = 12x + 9
3x – 6 = 12x + 9

3x – 12x = 9 + 6

-9x = 15
