LEARNING MODULE

Quarter: First
Subject: Music 5
Topic Area: Rhythm
Designed by: Ms. Jearlie Mae A. Basergo
Teaching devices: Modular and online instruction

Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs):

The learner…

 identifies the kinds of notes and rests in a song

 recognizes rhythmic patterns using quarter note, half note, dotted half note, dotted
quarter note, and eighth note in simple time signatures
 identifies accurately the duration of notes and rests in 2/4, ¾, and 4/4 time signatures
 creates different rhythmic patterns using notes and rests in time signatures

EXPLORE

Symbols

 Music is composed of notes, rests and other symbols.

 Notes symbolize sound and rests symbolize silence.
 Each note and rest have different value.
 Look at the note and rest chart, study how notes and rests are connected to each
other with the use of their values.

Note and Rest Chart

 Dotted note/rest is simply as it sounds, a note/rest with a dot next to the right
of the note head as shown below.
 For example, a dotted half note gets 3 beats - value of a half note is 2, half of 2
is 1 so 2 + 1 = 3.

Activity 1:
Name the notes and rest in the song below. Write your answers on the space provided.

Process Question:

1. How do rests and notes work together?

2. Why are symbols important?

FIRM-UP
 Rhythmic patterns are the rhythmic road signs in a piece of music. Typically, a
rhythmic pattern can be found in just two to four measures in any piece and includes
strong beats (also called pulse beats or big beats), weak beats (also called meter beats),
and a section of the melodic rhythm.

 The time signature (also known as meter signature, meter signature, or

measure signature) is a notational convention used in Western musical notation to
specify how many beats (pulses) are to be contained in each bar and which note
value is to be given one beat. In a musical score, the time signature appears at
the beginning of the piece, as a time symbol or stacked numerals, such
or 3/4 (read three four time, respectively).

The lower numeral indicates the note value that represents one beat (the beat unit).
The upper numeral indicates how many such beats there are grouped together in a
bar.

2 4 Time Signature – 2 beats per measure (quarter note receives 1 beat)

3 4 Time Signature – 3 beats per measure (quarter note receives 1 beat)

4 4 Time Signature – 4 beats per measure (quarter note receives 1 beat)

Activity 2
Identify what time signature is used for the following rhythmic pattern.

1. _________________________

2. _____________________

3. __________________________

Process Questions:
1. How will you be able to create rhythmic patterns in music?

celebrations. The use of earthen pot, iron, and aluminum kettle were introduced.
Filipinos learned the art of pot making to improve food quality.
 Jars were also made by ancient Filipinos as burial container of their dead, like the
Manunggul Jar of Palawan.
 Filipinos’ craftmanship is also shown in the boat called balangay.
