COLLOIDS are heterogeneous

mixtures with intermediate particles size

between a solution and a suspension.
This means, that the dispersed particle of
colloids is larger than those of a solution
but smaller than those of a suspension.

Colloids are mixtures where particles

of one substance are evenly distributed
throughout another substance. They
appear very similar to solutions, but the
particles are suspended in the solution
rather than fully dissolved. The difference
between a colloid and a suspension is
that the particles will not settle to the
bottom over a period, they will stay
suspended or float.
An example of a colloid is milk. Milk is
a mixture of liquid butterfat globules
dispersed and suspended in water.
Colloid particles may
be seen in a beam of
light such as dust in air
in a “shaft” of sunlight.
Concentrated colloids are often cloudy
or opaque. Dilute colloids sometimes
appear as clear as solution. Dilute
colloids appear to be homogeneous
because their
dispersed particles are
so small. Dispersed
colloid particles
scatter light, a
phenomenon called
the Tyndall effect.
