Solve the following problems SYSTEMATICALLY. Show your complete and correct solutions for each
problem. Enclose your final answers in a box. Non-enclosure of final answers in a box will invalidate
your final answers. Apply three (3) decimal places in all your solution.

Problem #1: [15 points]

Determine the correct length of a line, 256.32 m long, measured using a 50 m steel tape at 38 ℃. The steel
tape was calibrated at 20 ℃.

Problem #2: [15 points]

The distance taken at elevation 1200 m above sea level is 6,750 m. Determine the sea-level distance.

Problem #3: [20 points]

The depth of a mine shaft was measured as 834.660 m using a 1000-m steel tape having a cross-section of
10 mm2 and a linear density of 0.08 kg/m. Calculate the correct depth of the mine shaft if the tape was
standardized at a tension of 182 N. The Young’s modulus of elasticity of the tape material is 210 kN/mm 2
and g= 9.81 m/s2.

Problem #4: [25 points]

A civil engineer used a 30-m tape in measuring an inclined distance. The measured length on the slope was
recorded to be 459.20 m. long. The difference in elevation between the initial point and the end point was
found to be 1.25m. The 30-m tape is of standard length at a temperature of 10℃ and a pull of 50 N. During
measurement the temperature reading was 15 ℃ and the tape was supported at both ends with an applied
pull of 75 N. The cross-sectional area of the tape is 6.50 mm2 and the modulus of elasticity is 200 GPa. The
tape has a linear density of 0. 075 kg/m, 𝛼= 0.0000116/℃. Determine the horizontal distance.

Problem #5: [25 points]

A 50-m steel tape was standardized and supported throughout its whole length and found to be 0.00205m
longer at an observed temperature of 31.8℃ and a pull of 10 kilos. This tape was used to measure a line
which was found to be 662.702m at an average temperature of 24.6℃ using the same pull. Use coefficient
of expansion of 𝛼= 0.0000116/℃. Compute the correct length.
