An outline is a tool used to organize written ideas about a topic or thesis into a logical order.
Outlines arrange major topics, sub- topics, and supporting details.

Topic outline uses words and phrases to show the main ideas, subordinate ideas, and the details
that support them.

The sentence outline use full sentences. The sentence outline is more specific then the topic outline
which is very general.

Steps in Organizing information in an outline

1. Select the type of outline that you will use a topic outline or a sentence outline.
2. The title of the outline must contain the core idea of what you plan to write. The first letter of its
important words must be capitalized. The title must not be underlined or placed in quotation
mark unless it is a quotation.
3. Label the main idea with Roman numerals. The outline must have at least two main ideas, as a
general rule by virtue of division, there should always be at least two ideas of the same level. For
example, if there is a I, there should always be a, II.
4. Subordinate ideas further explain the main ideas. Label them with capital letters. They must be
intended below their respective main ideas. There must be at least two subordinate ideas.
5. Details explain the subordinate ideas. Label them with Arabic numerals. They must be intended
below their respective subordinate ideas. There must be at least two details under each
subordinate idea.
6. Sub- details maybe added to enhance the details. Label them with lower case letters. They must
be intended below their respective details. There must be at least two sub-details under each
detail.

Get a partner, interview each other and conduct a Biography outline. Create a topic outline and make it
a sentence outline. Write it in a crosswise sheet of paper you have ten minutes to answer.

Assignment!

Using different kinds of sources find a topic then create an outline whether a topic outline or a
sentence outline. After you choose your topic and create your outline, then make an essay compose
with three paragraphs. Write it in a whole sheet of paper.
