Question 1
In Figure 1, each concentrated load P is 10 kN, with a distance to the closest end of the beam a
as 1 m. The span between the two supports L is 4 m. Calculate:

a) The reaction to the beam from the pin support at point A. (Ans: 10 kN upward)
b) The reaction to the beam from the roller support at point B. (Ans: 10 kN upward)
c) The bending moment at point A. (Ans: 0)
d) The bending moment at point B. (Ans: 0)
e) The bending moment at point C. (Ans: 10 kNm anticlockwise)
f) The bending moment at point D. (Ans: 10 kNm anticlockwise)

Question 2
In Figure 2, a cantilever beam AB of length L = 2m carries a uniform load of intensity q = 10 kN/m over
one-half of its length. Calculate:

(a) The reaction of the clamped support to the beam at A

(Ans: 10 kN upwards; 15 kNm anticlockwise)
(b) The bending moment at point A (Ans: 15 kNm anticlockwise)
(c) The bending moment at point C (Ans: 5 kNm clockwise)
