A 6 m long, simply supported beam AB carries a uniformly distributed load of 30 kN/m together
with concentrated loads of 20 kN at 1.5 m from each end (Figure 5). The beam cross-section
consists of a symmetrical I-section 0.3 m deep, which has a second moment of area I = 200 × 10−6
m4, with top plates 0.3 m wide × 18 mm thick, riveted to the top and bottom flanges of the I-section
(see Figure 5b).
b) Find the percentage increase in strength owing to the addition of the plates. (Ans: 111.4% )
