ABSTRACT

Public speaking is a common fear among individuals, and it

often begins during adolescence. This research aims to explore

the fear of public speaking among Grade 11 students at Santa Rosa

National High School. By understanding the underlying causes and

effects of this fear, educators and school administrators can

implement effective strategies to support students in overcoming

their and developing vital communication skills.

This study employs a qualitative research design, utilizing

interviews to gather data from selected Grade 11 students. The

findings will shed light on the factors contributing public

speaking phobia, such as self-confidence, social anxiety, and a

lack of experience. The results will provide valuable insights

into the students' perspectives. The research study may also help

to devise targeted interventions to alleviate public speaking

anxiety and promote students' overall personal and academic

growth.

Chapter I

The Background of the Study

Introduction

Glossophobia, or a fear of public speaking, is a very common

phobia and one that is believed to affect up to 75% of the

world’s population (Black, R. 2019). Many individuals,

particularly students, experience fear and anxiety while speaking

in public. This fear can affect the students academic and social

performances at school because of being afraid in front of other

people through oral presentations and speeches. It can cause low

grades, low self-esteem, no communication, and so on. This issue

must be given attention because there are a lot of individuals

out there, especially students that needs help to overcome their

fear of public speaking.

However, based on what we observed, it seems that the number

of individuals who are lacking in self-confidence are increasing.

In general, students struggle with public speaking because they

lack self-confidence and knowledge about the English language.

For instance, in Malaysia, Tee, X (2021) revealed that students

or the new graduates often have poor knowledge of the English

language due to their anxiety. This situation requires immediate

5
SANTA ROSA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Senior High School Department

attention, using self-regulatory strategies to cope with their

anxiety. They used affective strategies such as listening to

music and taking deep breaths to focus on the presentation, which

led to the sharpening of their presentation skills and resolved

one of the major reasons that contribute to unemployment.

In the Philippines, Legnas, M. et al. (2020). Judgment was

the main reason why the individuals suffered from fear of public

speaking. It leads the students to lose their confidence,

affecting their communication skills. The findings demonstrated

that readiness helped students overcome mental obstacles. The

researchers also discovered that acquiring the ability to speak

with confidence is a way to get over a fear of public speaking.

In Santa Rosa National High School we observed that a lot of

students whose afraid of speaking in public regardless of their

gender. We also called them as introverts because of their

inconspicuous ways. This research aims to explore the factors

contributing to this fear of public speaking among grade 11

students at Santa Rosa National High School. The first objective

is to understand their lived experiences, perceptions, and why

they have fear. The second objective is to give them support and

advice, specifically to our fellow students, to boost their self-

6
SANTA ROSA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

confidence when it comes to speaking in front of other people.

Lastly, this study aims to improve their speaking skills. In

addition, the study aims to empower students’ abilities to speak

confidently, express themselves, overcome their fears, and

ultimately improve their ability to communicate and interact with

others.

Review of Related Literature

According to Breakey, L.(2005), on her study “Fear of public

speaking-the role of the SLP” Although there are some individuals

who have a true phobia of speaking in a public forum, public

speaking is usually near the top of any list of activities that

most individuals dislike, fear, or avoid. Such non-phobic

speakers are the subjects of this article. It describes some

basic causes for these fears; considers evaluative and treatment

procedures; and provides a rationale for the involvement of the

speech-language pathologist in “wellness” management.

As stated by Grieve et al., (2021) Oral presentations and

public speaking are an important aspect of the student experience

in the United Kingdom higher education. Many modules (self-

7
SANTA ROSA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Senior High School Department

contained units normally within a programme of study) use

presentations as a form of assessment and require students to

verbally engage in small and large group settings to enhance

learning. The aims of this qualitative survey were two-fold.

First, it sought to gather further insight into the fears

experienced and strategies used by students who fear public

speaking, including oral presentations. The second objective was

to determine whether their fear affected their experience of

higher education.

According to Jim, Vriska and Nihta (2022) Through the result

of observation, there were still many students who had difficulty

developing speaking skill because of the lack of self-confidence.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to explore and address the reasons behind

students’ fears in public speaking according to their respective

experiences why they struggling speaking in public.

This research study will be conducted in the senior high

school department of Santa Rosa National High School with the

year, 2022-2023. Specifically, the study sought the following

problems:

1. What are the primary reasons of fear of students in

public speaking?

2. How does the students fear in public speaking affects

their personal lives?

3. What are the challenges they facing in terms of public

speaking?

Significance of the Study

The findings of the study may be given to our fellow

students to help them how will they handle and overcome their

fear in facing people while they are speaking.

In addition, this study investigates the factors

contributing to this fear, explores the students' experiences and

perceptions, and seeks to develop strategies to help alleviate

their anxiety and improve their public speaking skills to be

become confident speakers.

Scope and Delimitation of the study

10
SANTA ROSA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Senior High School Department

The research study will focus on exploring the lived

experiences and understanding the factors contributing to the

fear of students in public speaking, specifically among Grade 11

students at Santa Rosa National High School. The study aims to

explore the extent of this fear, its causes, and the possible

strategies to alleviate or overcome it.

This research will use a case study as research method, to

gather data through interviews, direct observations and

questionnaires in conducting study among the 10 to 15 Grade 11

students enrolled, this school year 2022 to 2023 based on the

participants experiences, perceptions, and attitudes towards

public speaking. Likewise, this research study will focus on

students' fears, anxieties, and challenges associated with public

speaking, as well as their coping mechanisms and strategies for

improvement.

lived experience of the students in Santa Rosa National High

School. A purposive sampling technique will be used to select a

diverse group of senior high student from grade 11 from different

academic strands who experiences fear in public speaking.

Individual interviews will be conducted with selected students to

explore their experiences and perception about the said issue.

Classroom observation will be conducted to supplement the

interview data. With the total of 15 participants in the selected

grade 11 students. All the participants identities will be

anonymized their data and kept confidential. Only the researchers

of the study will have access to the data. Prior approval the

relevant Santa Rosa National High School administration will be

sought to conduct the research.
