WHO ARE WE?

YOUTH IN ACTION ORGANISATION IS A REGISTERED NPO WITH A REGISTRATION NUMBER [164-233 NPO] NON-PROFIT ORGANISATION, YIA
WAS ESTABLISHED BY AIDS ACTIVIST MANDLANKOSI CHRISTOPHER MTHEMBU IN THE FREE STATE PROVINCE ON THE 14 FEBRUARY 2014.IT
POSITIONS ITSELF TO PROVIDE FOOD SECURITY PROGRAMME, SEED & FEED THE FUTURE SCHOOL FEEDING SCHEME,CHBC-COMMUNITY
HOME BASED CARE TO PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV & AIDS,ECD-EARLY CHILD DEVELOPMENT,OVC-ORPHANS & VULNERABLE CHILDREN’S,IEC-
INFORMATION EDUCATION AND COMMUNICATION PROVIDING COUNSELLING AND EDUCATION FOR THE PREVENTION OF HIV INFECTION TO
YOUNG PEOPLE, OUR MAIN PURPOSE IS TO STRENGTHEN THE ROLE AND IMPACT OF YOUTH AND WOMEN IN SOUTH AFRICA SOCIETY.

WE ARE AN EDUCATIONAL/RESEARCH, ON-GOVERNMENT ORGANISATION. OUR PRIMARY FOCUS IS TO PROVIDE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
AND UPLIFTMENT PROGRAMMES. WE ARE A VIBRANT ORGANISATION WITH OFFICE IN SOUTH AFRICA-FREE STATE, QWAQWA WE FOCUS ON
GENDER JUSTICE, RIGHTS IN CRISIS, ESSENTIAL SERVICES, ECONOMIC JUSTICE AND CLIMATE CHANGE.

HISTORY OF THE FOUNDER OF YOUTH IN ACTION.

YOUTH IN ACTION WAS ESTABLISHED BY MR MANDLANKOSI CHRISTOPHER MTHEMBU WHO RECENTLY STAYED AT LERATONG CHILDREN’S
HOME SITUATED IN QWAQWA DUE TO THE PASSING OF MY MOTHER THOKOZILE RADEBE WHO PASSED AWAY IN APRIL 2003.

MY MOTHER HAD HIV & AIDS WHILE SHE WAS TRYING TO EARN A LIVING FOR ME AND MY YOUNGER BROTHER, ONE NIGHT MY MOTHER
BECAME VERY SICK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, I KNOCKED FOR THE NEIGHBOUR’S AND THEY TOLD ME (COME IN THE MORNING WE
SLEEPING), (THEIR SLEEP WAS MORE IMPORTANT THAN TO LOSE A LIFE) I WAS THEN FORCED TO TAKE MY MOTHER WITH THE WHEELBARROW TO
THE HOSPITAL, CARS WERE PASSING, NONE STOPPED AND ASSIST ME UNTIL I REACHED THE HOSPITAL.

MY MOTHER WAS GASPING LITTLE I DIDN’T KNOW THAT SHE WAS DYING, WHEN I REACT TO THE VREDE-PHUMELELA HOSPITAL ONLY TO FIND
OUT THAT MY MOTHER HAS PASSED AWAY.

MY MOTHER WAS BURIED BY STATE PROPERTIES, WE WERE THEN SEPARATED WITH MY BROTHER WHILE HE WAS ADOPTED BY ONE FAMILY UP
TO TODAY I HAVEN’T SEEN HIM, I THEN MOVED TO LERATONG CHILDREN’S HOME IN QWAQWA WERE LIFE WAS VERY DIFFICULT FOR ME, NOT
UNDERSTANDING THE ENVIRONMENT I WAS IN, SO MANY THINGS TOOK PLACE IN MY EYES, CRIME, RAPE, CHILD ABUSE, WOMAN ABUSE AND
DRUG ABUSE. I WENT TO SCHOOL UNTIL I FINISH MY SCHOOLING AND I WAS ADOPTED BY A PASTOR WHO RAISED ME UNTIL I HAD EXPERIENCE.

LOSING A MOTHER WAS ONE BIG THING IN MY LIFE, I DIDN’T KNOW MY FATHER AND I WAS NEVER WORRIED ABOUT HIM, BUT THE PAIN OF
LOSING THE BREAD WINNER IS THE PAIN THAT NO DOCTOR CAN EXPLAIN.
MY MAIN REASON FOR THIS ORGANIZATION IS TO ASSIST YOUTH THROUGH SKILL DEVELOPMENT, SKILL TRANSFER, LIFE ORIENTATION, CHANGE
THEIR MIND-SET, RESPONSIBLE YOUTH, TO BE WHAT THEY WANT TO BECAME, ASSIST YOUTH TO BE MORE REASONABLE AND WILLING, LIFE
WITHOUT PARENTS IT’S VERY DIFFICULT TO SUSTAIN.

HOW DID THE PROJECT START (HISTORIC BACKGROUND)?

I STARTED THE ORGANISATION IN 2014, BUT ONLY REGISTERED THE ORGANISATION IN 2015. MANDLANKOSI CHRISTOPHER MTHEMBU IS THE
FOUNDER, WHEREBY HE MADE A RESEARCH ON WOMEN, YOUTH IN BUSINESS AND ENTREPRENEURS. HIS FINDINGS THAT IN SURROUNDING AREA
WARDEN AND VREDE) THE NGO PROJECTS INITIATED WERE NOT SUSTAINABLE DUE TO THE LACK OF COMMITMENT & CREATIVITY BY THE
FOUNDERS.

AFTER THE VISIT TO THE PARLIAMENT AND HAVING LUNCH WITH THE MINISTER OF PUBLIC WORKS HIS EXCELLENCY HON: THULAS NXESI AND
HAVING A TOUR TO OTHER PROJECT, THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE SOUP KITCHEN IN 2014, MANDLANKOSI CHRISTOPHER MTHEMBU IDENTIFIED
A NEED AS IT IS REQUIRED FOR PEOPLE WITHOUT SKILLS. ALSO THE NEED TO CREATE SUSTAINABLE JOBS, AND ENSURING THE SUSTAINABILITY OF
SOUP KITCHEN PROJECT IN QWAQWA WAS A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR, HENCE THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A FOOD SECURITY PROJECT.

EVEN THOUGH QWAQWA, WARDEN AND VREDE HAS A LOT OF RAIN FOREST THAT COULD SUPPORT MASSIVE AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITIES, FOOD
IS NOT PRODUCED IN SUFFICIENT QUANTITIES FOR LOCAL CONSUMPTION AND EXPORTS.

PREGNANT AND LACTATING WOMEN AND YOUNG CHILDREN ARE PARTICULARLY VULNERABLE TO FOOD SECURITY THAT IS MOST PREVALENT IN
THE RURAL AREA.

FOOD SECURITY HAS A PHYSICAL OR PHYSIOLOGICAL, SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC IMPACT. THE PHYSICAL IMPACT MANIFESTS AS MALNUTRITION
THAT CAUSES EARLY DEATH. AT THE SOCIAL LEVEL THE EFFECT OF FOOD INSECURITY IS A STRAIN IN THE SOCIAL NETWORK RESULTING IN SOCIAL
BREAK DOWN.

ECONOMICALLY THERE HAS BEEN PRODUCTIVITY LOSS IN THE AGRICULTURAL SECTOR SINCE THE FIVE YEARS OR SO. FOOD EXPORTS
CONTRIBUTION HAS DECLINED FROM 30 % 2006 TO 10% IN 2009. THIS ISSUE HAS ATTRACTED THE ATTENTION OF YOUTH IN ACTION. THE
ISSUES RAISED ABOVE FORM THE BASIS FOR THE DESIGN AND CONTENT OF THE PROJECT INTERVENTION OUTLINED BELOW. THE PROJECT FORMS
PART OF A COMPLETE.

2-YEAR PROGRAM WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF CONTRIBUTING TO THE ALLEVIATION OF POVERTY AND JOB CREATION.

UNEMPLOYED WOMEN, MEN AND YOUTH IN THE ENTIRE FREE STATE
- THE MISSION OF THE ORGANISATION IS STRIVING TO DEVELOPED AND MAINTAIN SYSTEMS THAT ENABLE PUBLIC REPRESENTATIVES AT
ALL THREE SPHERES OF GOVERNMENT, TO HAVE DYNAMIC CONTACT WITH THE PEOPLE OF OUR COUNTRY.
- YIA ENVISIONS A PLACE WHERE YOUTH SHARE STORIES, PRACTICE LEADERSHIP, AND CREATE CHANGE IN THEIR COMMUNITIES.

POVERTY IN QWAQWA, WARDEN AND VREDE

WITHIN THE FREE-STATE PROVINCE, ONE THIRD OF THE POPULATION HAS ACCESS TO EMPLOYMENT, 70% OF HOUSEHOLDS IN THIS AREAS LIVE
BELOW THE POVERTY LINE.

CREATING JOBS, AND ESTABLISHING FOOD SECURITY PROJECTS IS THE ONLY HOPE FOR THE REMAINING TWO- THIRD.

OUR PROBLEM STATEMENT:

IN THE LIGHT OF THE HIGH LEVEL OF STRUCTURAL UNEMPLOYMENT IN QWAQWA, WARDEN AND VREDE, HOUSEHOLDS AND LOCAL FOOD
SECURITY REQUIRES ACCESS TO NATURAL RESOURCES AND MEANINGFUL SUPPORT FOR OWN PRODUCTION OF FOOD. FOR THE MOST FOOD
INSECURE HOUSEHOLDS, THESE CONDITIONS DO NOT EXIST AT PRESENTS.

OUR OVERALL OBJECTIVE:

TO INCREASE HOUSEHOLDS AND LOCAL FOOD SECURITY, BY IMPROVING SECURE ACCESS TO NATURAL RESOURCES, TEMPORARY JOB CREATION
FOR 150 UNEMPLOYED WOMEN, YOUTH AND MEN, FOR PRODUCTION SUPPORT TO ENABLE AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION TO MEET FOOD
NEEDS.

OUR PROJECT PURPOSE

TO FACILITATE ACCESS TO OPEN GARDENS AND ERECT VEGETABLE TUNNELS, BY DEMONSTRATING THAT THERE WILL BE AN INCREASE OF FOOD
IMMEDIATELY, AT THE POLICY AND IMPLEMENTATION LEVELS THE LINK BETWEEN ACCESS TO LAND AND FOOD SECURITY.

CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP:

A WORKSHOP WILL BE HELD WITH THE GROUPS TO SECURE THEIR CONSENT TO PARTICIPATE, AND TO INCORPORATE FORMAL STRUCTURES INTO
THE PROJECT TO ENSURE THEIR FULL PARTICIPATION IN THE PLANNING AND DIRECTION OF THE FOOD SECURITY PROJECT. AT THE ONE-DAY
WORKSHOP, THE BASELINE OF FOOD PRODUCTION WILL BE PROPOSED AND BENEFICIARIES WILL BE MOTIVATED.

FOOD SECURITY

PLANTING OF ALL KINDS OF VEGETABLE SEEDS IN 1500 OPEN GARDENS FOR VERY POOR UNEMPLOYED FAMILIES, IN THE 5 VILLAGES IN
QWAQWA, WARDEN AND VREDE. WE WILL SELECT A BENEFICIARY FOR THE TEMPORAL EMPLOYMENT FROM EACH.

ERECTING 10 VEGGIE TUNNELS FOR THE ORPHAN, FEEDING SCHEME AND TRAIN LEARNERS ON FOOD SECURITY.
PLANTING VEGETABLES AT 5 CLINICS IN RURAL AREA FOR SUPPORT GROUPS (PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS) AND VULNERABLE FAMILIES. FOR
THEIR DAILY FOOD SUPPLY SINCE MOST OF THEM ARE ON MEDICATION AND UNEMPLOYED

ERECTING 5 VEGGIE TUNNELS WHICH ARE IDENTIFIED, 5 HOUSEHOLD BACKYARDS WHICH HAS ENOUGH SPACE TO PUT FOOD ON THEIR TABLES
AND DISPLAY THE FINAL PRODUCT FOR SALE TO LOCAL PEOPLE IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD.

- PLANTING ON OPEN FIELDS OR LAND FOR 20 SMALL SCALE FARMERS (1 HECTOR)


- ON JOB TRAINING WILL BE CONDUCTED FOR BENEFICIARIES.

THE BENEFICIARIES WILL BE CAPACITATED WITH ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILLS AND THIS WILL ALSO GIVE BENEFICIARIES A KICK START THAT CAN
GENERATE INCOME AND THEREFORE ENABLE THEM TO ALLEVIATE POVERTY IN ORDER TO SUSTAIN THEIR OWN LIVELY HOOD.

EDC-THE EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT PLAN.

ECD IS AN UMBRELLA TERM OR A GENERAL CLASSIFICATION THAT REFERS TO THE PROCESSES IN ACCORDANCE WITH WHICH CHILDREN FROM
BIRTH TO 9 YEARS OF AGE GROW AND FLOURISH SOCIALLY, PHYSICALLY, MENTALLY, EMOTIONALLY, SPIRITUALLY AND MORALLY.

IT ENTAILED TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRIMARY CAREGIVERS, PARENTS AND PRACTITIONERS. THE PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT WAS TO
PROVIDE A BASIC PACKAGE OF CARE AND EDUCATION SERVICES TO YOUNG CHILDREN FROM BIRTH TO FOUR, USING AN INTEGRATED APPROACH.

THE ORGANISATION WAS TASKED TO INCREASE REGISTRATION OF SITES AND TO EXPAND THE CURRENT LEVELS OF SUPPORT TO VULNERABLE
CHILDREN THROUGH FOOD SUBSIDIES TO SELECTED SITES, THEREBY CREATING A MARKET ABLE TO SUSTAIN THE EMPLOYMENT OF TRAINED
PRACTITIONERS AND SUPPORT STAFF. THE ANALOGY OF A SMALL SEED GROWING INTO A MASSIVE TREE AND PROVIDING SHELTER FOR MANY
HAS NEVER BEEN TRUER THAN IN THE EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION SECTOR. THIS IS WHY ONE OF THE MOST PRESSING PRIORITIES FOR THE
SOUTH AFRICAN, AND A KEY FOCUS OF THE YIA SOCIAL SECTOR, WAS TO EQUIP PRE-SCHOOL TEACHERS AND SUPPORT STAFF (COOKS,
GARDENERS AND ADMINISTRATORS) WITH ADEQUATE TRAINING IN ORDER FOR THEM TO PASS ON THEIR KNOWLEDGE TO BENEFIT THE
COUNTRY’S CHILDREN IN THE LONG TERM.

HCBC-HOME COMMUNITY BASED CARE

HCBC ENTAILS THE PROVISION OF COMPREHENSIVE SERVICES, INCLUDING HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES, BY FORMAL AND INFORMAL
CAREGIVERS IN THE HCBC AND SUPPORT PROGRAMMES. IT WAS PRIORITISED AS A COST-EFFECTIVE RESPONSE, SUBSTITUTING A SIGNIFICANT
PROPORTION OF AIDS-RELATED HOSPITAL CARE. THE ORGANISATION PROVED TO BE A CRITICAL COMPONENT OF THE EFFORT TO DELIVER
HOLISTIC HIV/AIDS AND TUBERCULOSIS-RELATED SERVICES AND IT REPRESENTED A STRATEGIC OPPORTUNITY TO ADDRESS KEY PRESSURE POINTS
IN INTERVENTIONS.

THE PROGRAMME AIMED TO PUT IN PLACE THE FOUNDATIONS FOR THE ROLL-OUT OF THE COMMUNITY HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT

SCHOOL NUTRITION PROGRAMME

THE PROGRAMME EMPLOYS COMMUNITY MEMBERS AS FOOD HANDLERS TO PROVIDE FOOD TO CHILDREN FROM NEEDY FAMILIES AND THUS
ADDRESS MALNUTRITION.

LET US LEARN

IS A MASS LITERACY CAMPAIGN AIMED AT INVITING ADULTS WHO MISSED OUT ON THEIR SCHOOLING, AND WHO CANNOT READ NOR WRITE, TO
JOIN LITERACY CLASSES PROVIDED ACROSS THE COUNTRY.IT IS AIMED AT ENCOURAGING COMMUNITY MEMBERS BY TRANSFERRING SKILL AND
KNOWLEDGE AND EMPOWERMENT.
WORKER (CH&DW) PROGRAMME BY EQUIPPING THOUSANDS OF UNEMPLOYED PEOPLE WITH THE FOUNDATION SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE TO
ENTER THE CH&DW TRAINING PROGRAMME. HCBC SERVICES INCLUDED:

- EARLY IDENTIFICATION OF FAMILIES IN NEED, ORPHANS AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN;


- ADDRESSING THE NEEDS OF CHILD-HEADED HOUSEHOLDS;
- LINKING FAMILIES AND CAREGIVERS WITH POVERTY ALLEVIATION PROGRAMMES AND SERVICES IN THE COMMUNITY;
- PATIENT CARE AND SUPPORT RELATED TO HIV/AIDS AND OTHER CHRONIC CONDITIONS;
- INFORMATION, EDUCATION AND COMMUNICATION;
- PATIENT AND FAMILY COUNSELLING AND SUPPORT;
- COMMUNITY MOBILISATION;
- ADDRESSING DISCRIMINATION AGAINST STIGMATISATION AND DISCLOSURE OF CHRONIC DISEASES;
- FAMILY SUPPORT, INCLUDING CAPACITY BUILDING, FAMILY PLANNING, BURIALS, SUPPORT FOR CHILDREN AND SOCIAL SERVICE ADVICE.
- INITIATING AND SUPPORTING INCOME-GENERATING PROJECTS.

HOME CARE SERVICES CAN BE CLASSIFIED INTO PREVENTIVE, PROMOTIVE, THERAPEUTIC, REHABILITATIVE, LONG-TERM MAINTENANCE AND
PALLIATIVE CARE CATEGORIES. IT IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF COMMUNITY-BASED CARE. COMMUNITY-BASED CARE IS THE CARE THAT THE
CONSUMER CAN ACCESS NEAREST TO HOME, WHICH ENCOURAGES PARTICIPATION BY PEOPLE, RESPONDS TO THE NEEDS OF PEOPLE,
ENCOURAGES TRADITIONAL COMMUNITY LIFE AND CREATES RESPONSIBILITIES.

SUSTAINABILITY:

CONTINUES PRODUCTION AND SUPPLY OF HIGH QUALITY VEGETABLES COUPLED WITH AFTER CARE FOR OUR BENEFICIARIES AND THEIR
CUSTOMERS.

THE HIGH LEVELS OF UNEMPLOYMENT AND POVERTY REMAIN ISSUES OF GRAVE CONCERN IN OUR COUNTRY, AND THE ORGANISATION
CONTINUES ON HOW TO ADDRESS THIS SITUATION IN THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY. HOWEVER, IS ONE OF GOVERNMENT MOST SIGNIFICANT TOOLS
IN THE FIGHT AGAINST THESE PERSISTENT SOCIAL CHALLENGES, UNEMPLOYMENT AND POVERTY REMAIN AMONG THE GREATEST THREATS TO
STABILITY IN SOUTH AFRICA, AND THE ORGANISATION GOES SOME WAY TOWARDS MITIGATING THIS THREAT. IT IS MY SINCERE HOPE THAT IT
WILL HAVE AN INCREMENTAL EFFECT, PROVIDING NOT ONLY SHORT-TERM EMPLOYMENT FOR MANY OF OUR COUNTRY’S MOST VULNERABLE
CITIZENS, BUT GREATER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE LONG TERM.

IN ADDITION TO THE CREATION OF JOB OPPORTUNITIES AND THE TRAINING OF BENEFICIARIES, THE ORGANISATION SET THE FOLLOWING
OBJECTIVES FOR ITSELF:

LINKING PEOPLE IN THE MARGINALISED SECOND ECONOMY WITH OPPORTUNITIES AND RESOURCES TO ENABLE THEIR PARTICIPATION IN THE
DEVELOPED FIRST ECONOMY.

- INTEGRATING SUSTAINABLE RURAL DEVELOPMENT AND URBAN RENEWAL.


- CREATING LAND-BASED LIVELIHOODS.
- PROMOTING COMMUNITY-BASED NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT.
- DEVELOPING NATURAL RESOURCES AND CULTURAL HERITAGE;
- REHABILITATING NATURAL RESOURCES AND PROTECTING BIODIVERSITY; AND
- PROMOTING TOURISM
THE PROGRAMME IS EXPECTED TO PRODUCE THE FOLLOWING OUTCOMES:

- INCREASED CREATION OF WEALTH IN AGRICULTURAL AND RURAL AREAS;


- INCREASED SUSTAINABLE EMPLOYMENT;
- INCREASED INCOME AND FOREIGN EXCHANGE EARNINGS;
- REDUCED POVERTY AND INEQUALITIES IN LAND AND ENTERPRISE OWNERSHIP;
- IMPROVED FARMING EFFICIENCY;
- IMPROVED NATIONAL AND HOUSEHOLD FOOD SECURITY;
- STABLE AND SAFE RURAL COMMUNITIES, REDUCED LEVELS OF CRIME AND VIOLENCE, AND SUSTAINABLE RURAL DEVELOPMENT;
- IMPROVED INVESTOR CONFIDENCE, LEADING TO INCREASED DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN INVESTMENT; AND
- PRIDE AND DIGNITY IN AGRICULTURE AS AN OCCUPATION AND SECTOR.

BENEFICIARIES OF THIS PROGRAMME ARE THE HUNGRY, SUBSISTENCE AND HOUSEHOLD FOOD PRODUCERS, FARMERS, AND AGRICULTURAL
MACRO-SYSTEMS WITHIN THE CONSUMER ENVIRONMENT

MONITORING AND EVALUATION

MONITORING AND EVALUATION OF THE ORGANISATION WILL CONTINUE AS A VERY IMPORTANT ELEMENT OF THE PROGRAMME AND THE
ORGANISATION WILL RETAIN THE OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS FUNCTION. THE PROCESS OF REVIEWING THE EXISTING M&E FRAMEWORK
IN ORDER TO MAKE AMENDMENTS FOR THE PROGRAMME HAS ALREADY COMMENCED. KEY AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT AND AMENDMENT
INCLUDE: THE IMPLEMENTATION OF MONITORING SYSTEM TO ALLOW FOR MORE ACCURATE AND RAPID REPORTING AND MANAGEMENT; AND
IMPROVEMENT OF THE EXISTING EVALUATION STUDIES IN ORDER TO OBTAIN QUALITATIVE FEEDBACK ON THE IMPACT OF THE PROGRAMME ON
