Decantation is a process that separates components of a mixture

based on differences in density. (The pupil’s will be given an idea and understands about the use
of winnowing and sieving in separating mixtures.)
How Decantation Works

Decantation involves two steps:

N. Discussing new concept and
practicing new skills #1 1. Sedimentation: Sedimentation uses gravity or a centrifuge to
separate mixture components based on density.

2. Decanting: Decanting is pouring or siphoning off the top

component of a mixture or draining the bottom component.

A solid component is called “sediment” (or “pellet” when

centrifugation is used). The liquid component that is collected is
called “decant.”

2. This method is a technique used in separating a

less-dense substance from a denser one.

a. evaporation
b. picking
c. decantation
d. all of the above

3. What will happen to the less-dense substance of

mixtures if you separate them using the decantation
method?

a. it will become solid

b. remains the same
c. it will float up
d. it will evaporate

4. In the process of decantation, the mixtures are left

_______________?

a. undisturbed
b. behind
c. removed
d. none of the above

5.How can the decantation method be useful to
