Basic Productivity Presentation Tool

Lesson Idea

Lesson Idea Name: From Story to Sprout

Grade Level/Content Area: 1st grade ELA
Content Standard Addressed: ELAGSEKRL3: With prompting and support, identify
characters, settings, and major events in a story.
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and
Computational Thinker 1.5.d: Students be able to do by the end of this lesson:
understand how automation works and use By the end of this lesson, students should be
algorithmic thinking to develop a sequence of able to identify the main characters, settings,
steps to create and test automated solutions. and major events in the story "The Magic
Seed," as well as understand the basic steps
or "algorithm" for planting and caring for a
seed.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

Understand key elements of storytelling and apply this understanding to create a simple
"plant care algorithm" that breaks down the steps required for growing a plant.
Selected Basic Productivity Tool: Microsoft Powerpoint

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation:

The lesson will start with the reading of "The Magic Seed." With prompting and support,
students will identify the main characters, settings, and events in the story. They will then

transition into a computational thinking activity where they will create their own "Plant Care
Algorithm," either by drawing, writing, or using online basic productivity tools. Students will
then have the opportunity to apply this algorithm by planting seeds in small pots.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:

Before transitioning to the hands-on planting activity, students can briefly use tablets or
computers to view a simplified video or animated sequence of plant growth. Co-engagement
will be encouraged; students can work in pairs or small groups to discuss their "Plant Care
Algorithm" and provide possible feedback to each other.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The lesson incorporates multiple means of Action and Expression, as well as Representation.
Students can draw or write to express their understanding, and the story, discussion, and
hands-on activity offer multiple ways to engage with the content.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

The lesson plan is made to be a comprehensive educational experience that combines
computational thinking with literacy. Watching students use their "Plant Care Algorithm" in
the real world is the portion of the session I look forward to the most since it transforms
abstract ideas into concrete action, addressing the instructional objectives.
