Career Exploration Presentation= 25%

The Career Exploration Presentation group project includes a powerpoint that must be
handed in by Friday, November 10th, 2023 at 11:59 PM along with the Group Contract and
the Peer Evaluations. Please see page 3 for the Marking Rubric regarding how this
assignment will be evaluated.

Career Exploration Presentation

Working in small groups assigned by the instructor, students are required to create a 15-20 min
presentation on an assigned health care employment opportunity.

Group topics will be randomly assigned by the instructor. In class time will be scheduled into the
syllabus to explain requirements and allow for rapport building, task delegation and communication
channels to be shared.

Purpose

This assignment provides students with an opportunity to explore career opportunities in the health
care sector. Students will also have the opportunity to use the skills provided in class to collaborate
and work as a team which is an essential part of providing excellent patient care.

The presentation will include an in depth review of the assigned career path including; scope of
practice, academic requirements, certification, employment opportunities, and career advancement.

Requirements

Once your topic is assigned, using the appropriate link below, locate your assigned topic and
research the career, ensuring guidelines are followed.

PSW Program: http://www.stclaircollege.ca/programs/postsec/personalsupport/

Compose a 15 - 20 minute powerpoint presentation. Ensure your presentation is conducted in a

manner that is understandable to someone who is not knowledgeable in health care (ie do not use
acronyms or medical jargon etc.). It may be easiest (but not necessary) to assume your audience to
be high school students you are trying to recruit into this career.

Research the scope of practice for the career assigned and ensure all questions are answered and
expanded on. Refer to grading rubric.

GRADING
The assignment will be graded out of 100 marks and worth 25% of your overall mark. Marks will be
individually assigned, based on peer assessments of your contribution to the group work.

FALL 2023
Presentation

The content outlined in your presentation, your 5 multiple choice quiz questions followed by the
answers and your presentation as a whole will consist of 100% of your assignment grade.

The Expectations of content include:

 Scope of practice of your selected career

 Soft skills pertinent to the profession
 Best practice guidelines specific to the career
 Academic requirements to become a professional in your field of choice
 Any additional certifications or professional membership options
 Employment opportunities
 Career advancement options
 Develop a 5-question multiple choice quiz with answers which accurately assesses the
presentation content
 Professional appearance, various communication methods, audience engagement, relevancy
of content, and the flow of the presentation will all be considered in the assessment (please
see attached rubric).

Quiz Questions

Each group will be required to create a 5-question quiz (Multiple Choice). The quiz, along with
answers must be included in the presentation.

Peer evaluation

All members of the group are required to complete a confidential (only for an instructor to view)
assessment of each group member’s contribution to the project. Peer evaluation forms will be posted
on blackboard. Each group member will complete and submit the peer evaluation. Each group
member will also evaluate themselves. These will be submitted along with the presentation and group
contract. Failure to submit a peer evaluation on time will get a zero grade for their peer evaluation
portion (20%).

AREAS OF FOCUS:
1) Thoroughly describe the scope of practice (what are the tasks/responsibilities), ensuring you
include hard and soft skills and best practices.
2) Identify the academic training required. This should include requirements to get into the
program along with expectations of the programs. Be Specific. (e.g. what is the required
entrance grade average from high school? Next, what grade average is required to ensure
program completion?
3) Identify any additional certification and any professional association requirements (ensure
you discuss the steps for belonging to this association)
4) Identify employment opportunities including the the availability of employment and wages.
MAKE SURE THE INFORMATION IS ACCURATE, (check out Employment Services Canada,
Stats Canada, job postings, websites etc.)
5) Research career advancement options (a nurse can become a nurse practitioner)
