CE A-2: Types of Computers

BASIC TYPES OF COMPUTERS

Computers are classified in many types or categories. A computer’s size, speed, price and
processing power are the basis for classifying computers.

1. Desktop Computer
A desktop computer is a personal computer that fits on or under a desk. It has a
monitor, system unit, keyboard and mouse, and either a horizontal or vertical (tower)
form factor. A desktop computer is meant to stay at one location. When talking about
a personal computer or a "PC," you are usually referring to a desktop computer found
at home or office.
2. Laptop
A laptop is a portable computer that is more efficient, and nearly as powerful, as
a desktop computer. Portable computers run off AC power or batteries. As you can
see in the picture, the Dell Latitude D610 laptop has everything needed for normal
operation. It has an LCD screen, keyboard, and touchpad. Although a laptop may
have multiple external devices and cables connected to it, no external connections
are required for standard usage.
Today, most laptop computers are becoming thinner and lighter to help compete with
other devices, such as tablets. Some laptops may be also be referred to
as Ultrabooks.

3. Netbook

Sometimes referred to as a mini notebook, mini laptop, or subnotebook, netbook is a

term coined by Intel that describes a portable computer about half the size of a
traditional laptop.
To reduce the cost of a netbook, they often come installed with a variant of Linux,
use much smaller screens, do not have a disc drive, and often use low capacity solid-
state drives. The picture shows an example of a Netbook, the ASUS Eee PC.
Netbooks are a great solution for users who want a computer for Internet access and
basic applications, such as a word processor.

4. Hybrid
Hybrid computer is a slang term used to describe a 2-in-1 PC. A 2-in-1 PC comprises
a screen and a detachable keyboard, combining the functionality of a laptop
computer and a tablet. Pictured is an HP Envy hybrid computer, an example of a 2-
in-1 PC that utilizes Windows 8.
Hybrid computers have the power of a computer and, when the keyboard is
detached, the portability of a tablet. For example, you could work on your hybrid
computer throughout the day for work and then detach the screen and use it in bed to
browse Facebook and watch YouTube videos.
A popular type of hybrid computer is the Microsoft Surface, with multiple versions
available to fit the needs of its users.

5. Tablet
A tablet, tablet computer, or tablet PC is a mobile computing device designed to be
held in one or two hands. It is approximately the size of a hardcover book (seven
inches or bigger), and resembles a large smartphone.
Tablets let you do many of the same things as a traditional computer. They can
browse the Internet, connect to social network apps, and display HD videos. They
excel at applications that do not require a large amount of precise user input.
Early tablet devices used light pens or a stylus as their input device. However, today
all tablets use a touch screen as their primary input device with the option to connect
external devices, such as a keyboard. Most tablets only have a few physical buttons;
the back, power, and volume buttons. Everything else can be done using your
fingers.

6. Smartphone

A smartphone is a cell phone that allows you to do more than make phone calls and
send text messages. Smartphones can browse the Internet and run software
programs like a computer. Smartphones use a touch screen to allow users to interact
with them.
There are thousands of smartphone apps including games, personal-use, and
business-use programs that all run on the phone. The picture is an example of the
Apple iPhone, one of the most popular smartphones available today.

7. Server Computer

Server computers are used as the main computers in a network serving and
connected to several other computers. They have the capability to handle multiple
requests for data and other processing tasks. Server computers may be set aside for
for a specific application such as running a web server for an organization’s website.
Servers do not necessarily have a terminal and in big applications are stacked
together and placed in cabinets or special rooms.

8. Embedded computer
Embedded computers are special purpose computers designed to do one or more
specific functions. They are usually included or embedded as part of a complete
system such as in appliances, cars or special purpose devices that are small as
watches to as big as nuclear power plant. They are usually designed to be reliable,
smaller and cheaper. Examples are:

 Consumer electronics including mp3 players, digital camera, mobile phones,

video game consoles, CD and DVD players, digital watches and many others.
 Household appliances such as microwave oven, washing machines,
refrigerators with digital control and others.
 Computer devices and office equipment such as printers, copiers, fax
machines and others.
 Cars have speed and cruise control, antilock brake system, airbag controllers,
navigation aids and others.
 Medical equipment such as electronic stethoscopes, vital sign monitors,
medical imaging and others.
