Doubling and halving

FMF1.21 Half your size

(Y1) Halving odd and even numbers
Line children up. Point to a child in the line and say any number.
The child responds by saying half of that number. For example,
you say Seventeen, the child says Eight and a half. Point to
another child and choose whether to ask them to halve an odd
number or an even number. If it is an odd number, the child gives
their answer as a mixed number, for example Four and a half. If
a child cannot respond promptly or correctly, they kneel down in
the line. Continue, keeping a fast pace. Try to go fast enough for
kneeling children to get a second chance.

Adaptations
Can also be used for:
• practising finding quarters of multiples of 4 (Y2+)
• practising halving even numbers to 100 (not crossing tens) (Y2+)
