Harmony on Land and Water: Exploring Amphibious Architecture

BRIEF:
The shore has long been the centre of a wide range of activities, including businesses, farming,
recreation, and fisheries. India's largest cities have all grown along the seashore. Nearly eight inches
of sea level rise have occurred along the shore over the course of several centuries, and experts
predict that this trend will continue owing to climate change. Ice sheet melting and ocean thermal
expansion are the two main causes of sea level rise. These elements are a result of global warming,
which is unavoidable. The exodus from these heavily populated places will be the end result of the
sea level rise's numerous effects, which include regular floods, erosion of beaches, and migration
from coastal communities.
India is a peninsular nation with three water-bound sides. It has a severe monsoon season that leaves
widespread devastation in its wake. Flooding in northern India is always brought on by perennial
rivers like the Ganga, the Brahmaputra, etc., while flooding in southern India is caused by cyclones
and a lot of monsoon rain. India is one of the nation’s most susceptible to climate change. All
residents should have access to safe, secure, and affordable buildings.
The many strategies for safeguarding and fostering a sustainable living environment for those who
live near rivers and the sea will be examined and documented in this paper. This will show how the
projected rise in sea level and the resulting climate change would increase the frequency of flooding.
The questions "How can a structure sit in ground can survive during floods" are addressed in this
dissertation. The methods for providing low-flood dwellers with amphibious homes that can be used
on both land and water. Amphibious architecture uses buoyant foundations to provide a safe,
affordable alternative for permanent static elevation.
KEYWORDS: Amphibious, floating structures, sustainability,

AIM:
To improve physical resilience in the pre-disaster phase of urban flooding

OBJECTIVES:
• To accomplish flood-resilience using adaptable, affordable, and local building methods and
materials.
• To create a series of model homes utilizing traditional methods and modular design
• To deal with the challenges of flooding and rising sea levels’
• The plan for this dissertation will give Indians a framework for building flood-resistant amphibious
constructions.

SCOPE:
Floods cause deaths and damage to infrastructure, which has a long-term negative impact on the
local economy. In order to address the existing situation, it will be necessary to construct a workable
structure.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS:
• Is it feasible to design buildings that foster community well-being?
• What part will design play in adjusting for rising water levels due to upcoming floods?
• how are stability, durability, and sustainability taken into account when building amphibious
homes?
• What crucial elements must be taken into account while choosing the best building methods and
materials?
