General Information

Course Description

This course is designed for B level students to acquire and develop the English language knowledge
and skills.

Expectations and Goals

The course aims at developing a wide range of skills:

● Language development, which involves grammar and extensive vocabulary learning.

● Writing skills, which have a specific focus on literacy and short essays, memoranda, notes.

● Reading which involves study of texts of topical relevance.

● Listening which includes comprehension of gist and detailed information.

● Communication skills, which cover communication situations.

Textbook and Other Course Materials

Text Book: Clare, A and Wilson, JJ. Speak out B2 3rd edition. Pearson.

Extra: Weekend Homework for the Intermediate group, METU.

Course Requirements

● Students are expected to come to class with their textbooks/workbooks and other materials
announced by the teacher.

● Students are expected to come to class prepared and by doing the tasks assigned
beforehand.

● Students are expected to be respectful of their classmates. This class should be a


community where each student feels safe to present their ideas in English.

● Students are expected to attend classes regularly. If a student is absent on the date of
graded class assignment or presentation, unless arrangements were made prior to the
absence or the student has a doctor’s note, no makeup opportunity will be available.

● Academic integrity is always expected. Cheating, or plagiarism, of any kind, will result in a
grade of “0” for all people involved.

Assessment

Grades will be based on:

● In-class exams (4 midterms): 48%

● CPS (Attendance, In-class participation, Assignments): 12%

● Final exam: 40%

*Your Classroom Performance Score. CPS will be based on your homework assignments, classroom
attitude, attendance, and bringing materials to the class.

Assignments

Students will be informed of the assignments during the class by the teacher.

Attendance

Students have to attend at least 80% of the classes during the term.
