Genre definitions
Horror: is a genre of fiction that is intended to disturb, frighten or scare. Horror is often
divided into the sub-genres of psychological horror and supernatural horror. Horrors are
great as they create great anticipation and thrill, however cannot be effective if not properly
done.
Action: a genre in which the protagonist is put through a series of events that typically
involve violence and physical feats. A pro of this genre is that there is no set storyline for
action films, allowing more freedom and creativity, this is extremely entertaining. However,
these can be very expensive as special effects cost a lot.
Sci-fi: science fiction is a genre of speculative fiction which typically deals with imaginative
and futuristic concepts such as science, technology, space exploration, time travel and
parallel universes.
Romance: refers to the type of fiction which places its primary focus on romantic love or
relationships between two people, usually has a happy ending.
Thriller: genre with numerous, often over-lapping sub genres including crime, horror and
detective fiction. They are characterized and defined by the moods they show, giving the
audience heightened feelings of suspense, anticipation and anxiety.
Comedy: genre that consists of work intended to be humorous or amusing by inducing
laughter. A pro is that comedies tend to be set in unrealistic settings and lighting does not
usually have to be specific so the overall productions will most likely be cheaper. A con is
that it is hard to achieve a funny story as everyone has different humour.
Drama: the specific mode of fiction represented in performance, intended to be more
serious than humorous in tone.
Crime: a story that is centered around the solving of a crime.
Fantasy: the genre of speculative fiction involving magical elements, typically set in a
fictional universe and usually inspired by mythology or folklore.
