WHAT’S IN
1. Social stratification refers to the social hierarchy or positions of people,
families, or societies based on their socioeconomic statuses and factors such as
wealth, education, race, occupation, or power. Its nature is that people who are
in a higher position will always have receive best services and they receive
greater responsibility and power, unlike those who are in a lower class, they are
the ones with the worst treatment, and they are the inferior types of people.
2. Social desirables are the factors that create social hierarchy or social
stratification. These desirables are power, prestige, and wealth. Power is the
ability of people or groups to achieve their goals despite opposition from others.
Prestige is the respect with which a person or status position is regarded by
others. Wealth includes property such as buildings, lands, farms, houses,
factories and as well as other assets. These three are the features that determine
an individual’s position in the socioeconomic aspect.

3. Social stratification has the following characteristics: universal, social,

ancient, consequential, and in diverse forms.

WHAT’S NEW
ACTIVITY 1: TOSS THE COIN
1. In the activity, it is basically explained that if one person wins over
another, he/she gets both coins. This certainly happens in social stratification
where there is a hierarchy among classes of the society in which privileges are
given to those who are in a higher socioeconomic class. Additionally, in social
stratification, there is something called open class system where an individual is
ranked based on what they have achieved. In this game, when you achieve
victory on a toss, you get a new coin, when this achievement repeats over and
over again until you get 10 coins, you will be hailed as the winner. But when
you get bankrupt, you will be hailed as the loser.
2. The winners who wins 10 coins from the tosses definitely represent the
people who belong in a higher class, while the losers who gets bankrupt from
the tosses represent the people who belong in a lower class.
3. Social stratification occurs in society when there social division and
rankings between members and families of the society. This social division is
purely based on race, education, gender, wealth, and power. People in the
higher class get better services and treatment than people in the lower class.
