ACTIVITY #2
GEED 10073- Art Appreciation

I. Directions: Interpret the following paintings. (5pts each)

1.

Interpretation:
This piece is an oil painting of various flowers, vegetables, fruits, and wheats. According to my
interpretation of the artwork, it is a portrait of a guy in a manner using various elements such as
fruits and vegetables to represent the image of a man. This Renaissance painting is both
strange and fascinating to me. As I look deeply into the painting, I can see that it includes
gourds, pears, apples, cherries, grapes, wheat, onions, artichokes, beans, corns, cabbage,
chestnuts, figs, plums, pomegranates, pumpkin, and olives. Furthermore, I like the strangeness
and wonder I felt when gazed at it. Lastly, I think this is one the most bizarre paintings that I
have ever laid my eyes on.

2.

Interpretation:
This, in my opinion, is a depiction of what a future metropolis may look like. I haven’t felt that
captivated by an artwork in a long time. Those clouds appear strange and frightening, as if this
was a city for chosen ones with artificially maintained good weather, while the surrounding area
where the people live is always cloudy as a result. Furthermore, I believe it demonstrates the
development toward the future depicted in this piece, as well as how technology may have a
significant influence on society, livelihood, and individuals. Finally, it eloquently shows how, by
using brushes and paints, artists may explore the world and engage in the adventures of the
mind that the physical world cannot provide.

3.

Interpretation:
As I instantly looked at this painting, I can clearly notice the technique that the artist used are
bright colors, thick brushstrokes and lines that are clearly emphasized. This masterpiece is an
image of Eve, Adam, the Serpent and the Lion. I noticed that Adam’s expression is a
combination of sadness and anger. While Eve looks like she stares out at the audience
unseeing, listless and disconsolate. It seems like the serpent curled to the tree between the
unsatisfied Adam and Eve, separates them from each other. While there is a lion that looks like
it is heading towards Adam and Eve’s position. Moreover, there are also flowers and trees
behind them that show that their setting is at the Gardent of Eden. Furthermore, I think the Artist
wants to convey the tiresome and isolation feeling that will compensate for the sins of the
people in this physical world.

Interpretation:
I believe the creator of this piece finds amazement and extraordinary beauty in the unexpected,
strange, the unnoticed and the unusual. A lady portrays a cage, holding a tree umbrella that
swings the birds. I believe the woman represents us, people, birds as our emotions, and trees
as our control of expressing ourselves. It is often reasonable to finally let go of your feelings and
be truthful to others, rather than keeping your emotions to yourself and concealing them from
others. Finally, letting go of the emotions that seem to hold us back allows us to experience
freedom and serenity that you could ever experience.

5.

Interpretation:
Since taking office on June 30, 2016, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has led a “war on
drugs,” killing thousands of Filipinos, the vast majority of whom are urban poor. Many innocent

and guilty Filipino people have perished as a result of President Duterte’s actions. In this
illustration, President Duterte is compared to a "grim reaper" who is In“charge of capturing
people’s souls in the physical world. The artwork appears to depict the grim reaper and
President Duterte acting as one, as we all know President Duterte is infamous for his iron fist
and execution of communists and drug lords.

II. Answer the following questions. (5 pts each)

6. Does your opinion about the artwork change the longer you look at it? Why?
Yes, people’s perspectives may change. We see what we see when we observe. We may often
perceive various elements in a piece of art after reflecting and changing our perspective. Mood,
mental presence, and effects from outside and from people all impact how we view things. That
is the wonder of observation: nothing stays the same because our brains never do. Our
environment, attitudes, and relationships influence how and what we perceive, as well as where
and when we perceive it. Moreover, it is one of my favorite features of art. Because we live in an
ever-changing, ever-developing world and reality, and because we are ever-changing, ever-
evolving humans inside and out, our viewpoint is always altering, an expanding static.

7. If you could ask the artist a question, what would you ask him/her?
The question I would probably ask to an artist is ‘What inspires you to make your art? Inspiration
opens our eyes to fresh possibilities by helping us to see beyond our everyday experiences and
constraints. Inspiration moves us from indifference to possibilities and alters our perception of
our own skills. Have always wanted to know their inspiration to create such a masterpiece. That
is why I am also eager to know what is the inspiration of the artist in making his/her artwork.

8. Put your body into the pose of some element of this artwork. How does it feel to be in
that position?
If I were to put my body in any of the artworks mentioned above, I would like to be the woman
cage holding a tree with birds on it. As imagined myself in that woman’s position, I felt control
and freedom. As let my emotions (birds) out of my system, must still control (tree) these
emotions and free this torment from trapping this to my body. The point is not to control your
emotions, but to not let your emotions control you. The main difference is that if you try to
suppress your feelings, you will eventually live in denial. You will still be angry, but just put on
a smile while you are still angry on the inside. It still has an influence over you. The idea is to
view your feelings as something that does not influence how you behave. You will feel much
more stable and free once you realize your emotions are no longer controlling you. When you
attempt to control your emotions, they will eventually control you. That is what I felt, after
imagining myself in that position.
