Halloween Bats

LESSON SUMMARY:
In Western cultures, bats are strongly associated with Halloween, a holiday rooted in Celtic traditions. Bats
are seen as symbols of the supernatural and the mysterious, often featured in spooky decorations and
folklore. Students will create striking Halloween bat-themed line art compositions using various line
techniques, emphasizing contrast, space and silhouettes.

- 10’12”in White Paper
- Pencils
- Black Markers
- Rulers
- Watercolor Paints

LESSON OBJECTIVES:
1. Students will: Engage in the understanding of how bats are associated with Halloween.
2. Students will: Encourage students to observe and analyze the physical features of bats.
3. Students will: Introduce students to the principles of composition, and patterns/lines.

Knowledge: Students will have experience with understanding traditions of holidays, and animals/symbols
that correlate with Halloween.

Skills: Students will have had built skills within line designs, silhouettes, and using rulers for designing
layouts within different spaces.

Dispositions: My hope is that students will build connections to celebrations and the art that is inspired by
different events and traditions.

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES/ACTIVITIES

Day One: (45-minute class period)


- Students enter classroom and find their seats. (1 minutes)
- Introduction to project. (3 minutes)
- Pass out materials to students. (1 minute)
- Start demo video and have students follow along with the steps. (37 minutes)
o Draw a circle in the center of their page.
o Step by step draw three bat silhouettes onto their pages.
o Add various lines across the pages.
o Add smaller lines within the spaces going in various directions.
- Cleanup materials and line up at the door. (3 minutes)
Total Time: 45 Minutes

Day Two: (45-minute class period)


- Students enter classroom and find their seats. (1 minutes)
- Re-introduction to project. (3 minutes)
- Pass out materials to students. (1 minute)
- Students will continue adding lines from previous weeks steps. (37 minutes)
- Cleanup materials and line up at the door. (3 minutes)
Total Time: 45 Minutes

Day Three: (45-minute class period)


- Students enter classroom and find their seats. (1 minutes)
- Introduction to project. (3 minutes)
- Pass out materials to students. (1 minute)
- Start painting demo video and have students follow along with the steps. (37 minutes)
o Using watercolor to paint.
- Cleanup materials and line up at the door. (3 minutes)
Total Time: 45 Minutes

ASSESSEMENT

Objective #1: Students will be assessed through observation, judged based on performance, creativity and
effort.
