Textured Turtles: Exploring the world of Tactile Art

- Tactile textures are about our senses of touch.
- Tactile textures are about how objects textures can make us feel.
- Tactile Textures are about the emotions associated with different textures.

LESSON SUMMARY: In this art project, students will dive into the fascinating world of tactile art as they
create textured clay turtles. By using clay as a versatile medium, students will explore the concept of texture,
pattern, and form. They will experiment with various sculpting and texturing techniques to design unique
turtle sculptures. The project encourages students to not only visualize and imagine, but also to feel and
shape their creations, fostering a multisensory experience that enhances their artistic understanding and
appreciation.

LESSON OBJECTIVES:
1. Students will: Create a turtle using clay.
2. Students will: Add textures to their turtles’ shells.
3. Students will: Experiment with adding colors and patterns onto their turtles shells.

Knowledge: Students will have background knowledge on working with clay, along with knowledge on
animals such as turtles.

Skills: Students will have has built skills on the importance of proper hygiene and safety when working
with clay, including handwashing and the use of responsible behaviors.

Dispositions: My hope is that while students are growing within their skills of materials, and how they can
perceive textures and the tactile effects that textures have,

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES/ACTIVITIES

Day One - 45 Minute Class Period


- Students enter classroom and find their seats. (2 minutes)
- Introduction to the project/Artistic influence. (10 minutes)
- Students follow practice demo with paly dough. (20 minutes)
- Work on past non-completed work, or do free choices. (8 minutes)
- Cleanup and lineup at the door. (5 minutes)
Total Time: 45 Minutes
Day Two – 45 Minute Class Period
- Students enter classroom and find their seats. (2 minutes)
- Re-introduction to the project/Artistic influence. (5 minutes)
- Students create turtles using airdry clay. (33 minutes)
o Taking turns using the textured tiles for the shells.
- Cleanup and lineup at the door. (5 minutes)
Total Time: 45 Minutes
- Students enter classroom and find their seats. (2 minutes)
- Re-introduction to the project/Artistic influence. (5 minutes)
- Students use tempera paints to paint their turtles. (33 minutes)
- Cleanup and lineup at the door. (5 minutes)
Total Time: 45 Minute

ASSESSEMENT

Objective #1: Students will be assessed through observation, judged based on performance, creativity and
effort.
