GAY-LUSSACS
LAW
law of combining volume
of gases.
Gay-Lussac’s law is a gas law
that states that the pressure
exerted by a gas (of a given
mass and kept at a constant
volume) varies directly with
the absolute temperature of
the gas.

EXAMPLE PROBLEMS
*the unit of
temperature must
P₁ P₂ always be in Kelvin (K)
=
*the unit of pressure
T₁ T₂ can be in mmHg, KPa,
Pa, atm, etc.
Example No. 1

P₁ = 1.88 ATM
T₁ = 300 K
T₂ = 600 K
What is the new pressure (P₂)?
Example No. 2

P₁ = 2000 Pa
T₁ = 20 °C
P₂ = 3762 Pa
What is the new temperature in
celsius (T₂)?
Example No. 3

A 20-liter cylinder contains 6

atmospheres (atm) of gas at 27
°C. What would the pressure of
the gas be if the gas was heated
to 77 °C?
Example No. 4

Find the temperature in Celsius

needed to change the pressure of
10.0 liters of a gas that has a
pressure of 97.0 kPa at 25 °C to
standard pressure. Standard
pressure is 101.325 kPa.
Example No. 5

A 30.0 L sample of nitrogen inside a

rigid, metal container at 20.0 °C is
placed inside an oven whose
temperature is 50.0 °C. The pressure
inside the container at 20.0 °C was at
3.00 atm. What is the pressure of the
nitrogen after its temperature is
increased to 50.0 °C?
PRACTICE TASK
1. A gas at a pressure of 2 atm and a temperature of 300 K is heated. If the
temperature is increased to 400 K while keeping the volume constant, what
is the final pressure of the gas?
2. You are trying to dispose of an aerosol container that has a pressure of
200000 Pa at 20 °C. When the container is disposed of, it may increase to a
temperature of 110 °C. What would the pressure be at this temperature?
3. Your car tire is reading 2.24 atm and the temperature outside is 80 °F.
What will the tire pressure be when the temperature outside is 0 °F?
(Assume the volume of the tire does not change if it goes flat)
4. A gas has a pressure of 668 mmHg at 0 °C. What is the temperature at
standard pressure(1 atm)?
5. The gas in an aerosol can is under a pressure of 300 kPa at a temperature
of 25°C. It is dangerous to dispose of an aerosol can by incineration. What
would the pressure(in kPa) in the aerosol can be at a temperature of
845°C?
