Section A [ 45 marks ]
Answer all questions.
1) The distribution of daily water intake, in litres, for 180 students of a college is as follows:

Water intake, x Number of students

0.95 < 𝑥 ≤ 1.25 28
1.25 < 𝑥 ≤ 1.55 53
1.55 < 𝑥 ≤ 1.85 45
1.85 < 𝑥 ≤ 2.15 34
2.15 < 𝑥 ≤ 2.45 12
2.45 < 𝑥 ≤ 2.75 5
2.75 < 𝑥 ≤ 3.05 3

(a) Construct a histogram for the distribution of water intake, and comment on the skewness of the
distribution. [4]
(b) State an appropriate measure of central tendency of the distribution of water intake, and calculate the
measurement. [4]

2) Two events, A and B, are such that 𝑃(𝐴) = 0.35 , 𝑃(𝐴 ∩ 𝐵 ′ ) = 0.14 and 𝑃(𝐵|𝐴′ ) = 0.98 . Find
(a) 𝑃(𝐴 ∩ 𝐵), [2]
(b) 𝑃(𝐵), [3]
(c) 𝑃(𝐴|𝐵). [2]

3) The cumulative probability distribution of a discrete random variable, X, is given by

0, 𝑥 ≤ 0,
𝑃(𝑋 ≤ 𝑥) = {𝑘𝑟, 𝑘 ≤ 𝑥 < 𝑘 + 2, for 𝑘 = 1, 3, 5, 7,
8𝑟, 𝑥 ≥ 9.
1
(a) Show that 𝑟 = 8. [2]
(b) Find 𝑃(2 < 𝑋 ≤ 5) and 𝑃(𝑋 ≥ 3). [3]
(c) Determine the probability distribution of X, and deduce its mean. [4]

4) The standard deviation of the masses of steel sheets in a batch of production is 5.67 kg. A random sample
of 100 steel sheets is drawn from the batch.
(a) What is the population concerned? [1]
(b) Determine the distribution of the sample mean and state any assumption made. [3]
(c) Find the probability that the different between the sample mean and population mean is at least
0.75 kg. [4]

5) A farmer claims that a new variety of tomatoes will yield at least 80% of good quality tomatoes. A random
sample of 120 of the tomatoes is selected and found that m tomatoes are of good quality. At the 5%
significance level, find the range of values of m for which the farmer has overclaimed the yield of good
quality tomatoes. [6]
6) A transport researcher conducts a survey to study the association between gender and preferred type of
transport used to the workplace. The responses from 300 randomly selected individuals are summarized in
the table below.
Preferred type of transport
Car Bus Others
Gender Male 37 41 44
Female 35 72 71
Perform a chi-squared test, at the 5% significance level, to determine whether there is an association between gender
and the preferred type of transport. [8]

Section B [ 15 marks ]
Answer one question only.
You may answer all the questions but, only the first answer will be marked.

7) An athletic coach is preparing his athletes for a 10 km running competition. The duration, in minutes, that
athletes should run in every training session to improve their endurance follows a normal distribution with
mean, 𝜇, and standard deviation, 𝜎. The probability that an athlete completes more than 90 minutes running
per session is 0.0228 and the probability that an athlete completes less than 60 minutes running per session
is 0.1587.
(a) Find 𝜇 and 𝜎. [5]
(b) Find the probability that an athlete runs at least 75 minutes per session. [3]
(c) In 50 running sessions, an athlete should run 20 sessions of at least 75 minutes per session in order to
qualify for the 10 km run. Using approximation, find the probability that an athlete qualifies to enter
the 10 km running competition. [7]

8) A school management plans to install a water dispenser in the school to encourage the students to drink
water. A teacher was assigned to conduct a survey to find the proportion of students who bring drinking
water to school. In a random sample of 400 students surveyed, 236 students brought drinking water to school.
(a) Find the unbiased estimate for the population proportion of the students who brought drinking water
to school. [1]
(b) Obtain a 95% confidence interval for the population proportion of the students who brought drinking
water to school. [4]
(c) The school management will install a water dispenser if less than 60% students bring drinking water
to school. Perform a test, at the 5% significance level, to determine whether the school management
should install a water dispenser. [6]
(d) Determine the smallest sample size which should be taken in order to obtain 95% confidence that the
difference of the sample proportion and population proportion is within 0.04. [4]
