Section A [ 45 marks ]
Answer all questions.

1) The numbers of trees planted in 21 housing estates are as follows:

108 42 81 53 70 53 44
75 140 137 76 45 41 77
64 44 47 72 83 95 40
(a) Find the median and the interquartile range of the numbers of trees planted. [4]
(b) Determine the outlier(s), if any. [2]
(c) Draw, on the graph paper provided, a box-and-whisker plot to represent the data. [3]

2) A box contains 3 blue balls, 4 red balls and 5 green balls. Six balls are taken out at random from the box
without replacement. Calculate the probability that
(a) at least one ball is green, [3]
(b) exactly four are red balls, given that at least one ball is green. [4]

3) The number of car accidents at a particular junction is not more than four accidents in a day. The
probability that there is no car accident in a day is 0.4 and the probabilities that there are at most one, two
and three car accidents in a day are 0.7, 0.85 and 0.95 respectively.
(a) Construct a probability distribution table for the number of car accidents at the junction in a day. [3]
(b) Calculate the mean of the number of car accidents at the junction in a day. [2]

4) A sample of size 500 is taken from a population p = 0.6. Determine the value of k such that
 
P(| p − p | k ) = 0.025, where p is a sample proportion. [5]

5) What is meant by significance level and critical region in hypothesis testing? [2]
A company packs sugar in packets labelled 1 kg. The mean and the standard deviation of the masses of
200 packets selected at random are 998 g and 16 g respectively. Perform a test, at 5% significance level,
to determine whether the mean of the mass of all packets of sugar packed by the company is less than 1
kg. [6]

6) The milk yield from two breeds of goats, A and B, is categorised as low, medium or high. One hundred
goats in a random sample are classified according to breed and milk yield. The results are summarised in the
table below.
Milk yield
Low Medium High
Breed A 32 20 16
B 10 18 4
Perform a chi-squared test, at the 5% significance level, to determine whether there is an association
between the breed of goats and the milk yield. [11]
Section B [ 15 marks ]
Answer one question only.
You may answer all the questions but, only the first answer will be marked.

7) In a given population, 25% of the population choose jogging as their leisure activity.
(a) Find the probability that, of the 20 people selected at random,
(i) exactly five people choose jogging as their leisure activity. [3]
(ii) at most 17 people do not choose jogging as their leisure activity. [4]
(b) Use a suitable approximation to find the probability that, out of 60 people selected at random, 12, 13,
14 or 15 choose jogging as their leisure activity. Justify the choice of your approximation. [8]

8) A company produces cylindrical metal rods. The diameters of rods have a normal distribution with mean
 cm and variance  2 cm2. A random sample of 100 rods is taken and the diameter x, in cm, of each rod is
measured. The results are summarised  x = 52.1 and  x 2
= 27.303.
(a) Calculate unbiased estimates for mean and variance of the population of the diameters of the rods.
[3]
(b) Determine a 95% confidence interval for the mean diameter of the rods. [4]
Explain how this confidence interval can be used to infer the result of a two-tailed hypothesis test on
the mean diameter of the rods. [2]
(c) Investigate, at the 1% significance level, whether the mean diameter of the rods is 0.512 cm. [6]
