Landslip Prevention and Mitigation Programme 2014, Package I,

Landslip Prevention and Mitigation Works

Method Statement for Raking Drain Installation

1. Materials (Proposed materials to be submitted in separate letters)

1.1 Pipes for raking drains shall have the following physical properties
(a) Material: non-metallic
(b) Minimum tensile strength: 21,300 kN/sq.
(c) Minimum compressive strength: 22,000 kN/sq.m
(d) Minimum flexural strength: 6,800 kN/sq.

1.2 The portion of openings in the perforated pipe shall cover between 50% and
70% of the circumference of the pipe. The percentage of opening areas to
overall surface area of the pipe shall not be less than 14% for 40mm dia
pipe, nor less than 8% for 65mm or above dia. pipe.

1.3 Couplers for the filter pipes shall also have non-perforated invert and shall
be of similar strength and design life of the pipe material. The lapped length
of coupler and each end of the filter pipes shall be at least 100 mm. The
elongation at the pipe connection shall be less than 5 mm under a 45 kg
pulling force.

1.4 Geotextile filter sheaths for raking drains shall be formed of non-woven
geotextile filter robust enough to prevent tearing.

1.5 Geotextile filter sheaths shall be complied with the physical properties as
stated in G.S. Clause 7.198(7).

1.6 Tying wires for jointing pipes and stitching filter sheath shall be non-
metallic wires of minimum breaking load of 400N or similar approved.

1.7 The particulars shall be submitted to the Engineer for approval at least 14
days before installation of raking drains starts.

2. Working Platform

2.1 Working platform is made from 48mm diameter 2.0 mm thick G.I. pipes
and 18mm thk plywood boarding. It is variably constructed to suit the actual
site situation.
2.2 Details of the working platform is attached in the Appendix 1 (The working
platform for raking drain construction shall be as same the working
platform for soil nailing works)

2.3 Adequate safety access will be provided for the platform.

2.4 Full boarding with toe board and hand railing shall be provided on the
working platform to fulfill the safety regulations.

2.5 Steel scaffolding shall be built by authorized tradesman. The scaffolding

competent person shall check and sign the Labour Department Form 5 bi-
weekly interval, or each time after construction or typhoon conditions.

2.6 Site safety supervisor shall sign the Form 3A daily for regular checking and
maintenance of steel scaffolding.

3. Raking Drain Drilling

3.1 Raking drain drilling shall be carried out using rotary or percussive-rotary
drill with water or air as flushing medium, unless otherwise agreed by the
Engineer.

3.2 Drilling rig to be pneumatic skid mounted down-the-hole drill rig.

3.3 The drillhole entry point shall be positioned within a tolerance of ±75 mm.
Deviation in alignment shall not exceed 1 in 20. Deviation from straight
shall not exceed 20 mm in any 3 m length of drillhole. A positive gradient
shall be maintained throughout the complete length of the hole. The
inclination of holes shall be measured by a method agreed by the Engineer.

3.4 The exact location of raking drains shall be marked on slope and agreed by
the Engineer prior to drilling.

3.5 Rotary percussive drilling machine shall be fixed onto the working platform
by swivel connectors and faced to slope (unless otherwise specified by the
Engineer).

3.6 The permitted deviation of drill holes shall be within the specified vertical
horizontal alignments. The angle of orientation and incline to slope shall be
adjusted by using a protractor, which is set along the drill rods or the
drilling machine.
3.7 In order to achieve straight drillhole to the required depth, the depth of
drillhole shall be controlled by the number of drill rods used in each
drillhole. Each drill rod is approximately 1m long, thus a 6m depth hole
may be achieved by connecting 6 drill rods.

3.8 Drilled holes shall be flushed clean with compressed air or water introduced
at the bottom of the hole, in order to clear any debris or groundwater before
installation of the raking drain.

3.9 The inclination, bearing, cleanliness and length of all drillholes will be
inspected by the Engineer.

3.10 No jacking or hammering of pipes shall be carried out during the whole
process of pipe insertion.

3.11 For Type 3 raking drain, the inner pipe shall be tied to the outer pipe at the
outlet to prevent it from sliding out due to seepage flow.

3.12 Drillholes shall be temporarily plugged or otherwise protected to prevent

entry of deleterious material after drilling.

4. Installation of Raking Drains

4.1 The length of raking drains assembled before installation shall not exceed
12.5 m. Connections between adjacent pipes shall be secured in such a
manner that the cumulative longitudinal extension of a 12.5 m assembled
length of pipe does not exceed 5 mm when pulled by hand.

4.2 Pipes for Type 2 and Type 3 raking drains are to be wrapped in geotextile
filter sheath in the following manner prior to installation in order to ensure
that the overlap and stitching shall be at the non-perforated invert of the
pipe. The pipe shall be placed onto and along the centre of a strip of
geotextile filter with the non-perforated invert at the top. The strip of
geotextile filter shall be of sufficient width to allow an overlap of at least 50
mm, and shall be drawn around the pipe and stitched together tightly with
non-metallic wires. The stitching shall be tied off onto the pipe and the
fabric at every 300 mm to prevent dislocation during installation. The filter
sheath shall be marked to ensure that the non-perforated invert is correctly
positioned during installation.

4.3 During delivery and installation of raking drains, care must be taken to
ensure that the pipe and geotextile filter sheath are not damaged. The
method of installing the raking drains shall be submitted to the Engineer for
approval prior to installation.

4.4 Before installation of drain pipes, the drillholes shall be checked for
cleanliness. Whenever any obstruction is encountered inside a drillhole
during pipe insertion, the pipe shall be withdrawn and the obstruction shall
be cleared before re-insertion. No jacking or hammering of pipes shall be
carried out during the whole process of pipe insertion.

5. Records of drillholes for raking drains

5.1 Records of drillholes for raking drains shall be kept by the Contractor on the
Site and a drillhole log for each drillhole shall be submitted to the Engineer
before installation of the raking drain starts. The borehole log shall contain
the following details:
(a) Drain reference number,
(b) Location, inclination, bearings, diameter and length of hole,
(c) Details of drilling progress,
(d) Details of water seepage related to drilling progress, and
(e) Details of samples taken.

6. Environmental Control for Drilling

6.1 Noise Control for drilling

- To keep regular maintenance for the drilling machine and the compressed
air-hoses, to prevent air leakages.
- Enclosed the drilling operation area by tarpaulin sheeting at an appropriate
height to reduce noise reflection effect.
- A noise assessment shall be carried out by a competent person where an
employee is likely to be exposed to noise at work, i.e., nearby drilling
machine or air compressor.
- The area where an employee is likely to be exposed to daily personal noise
exposure of 90dB(A), shall be demarcated and identified as an ear
protection zone by means of signs and notices sufficient to indicate that (a)
it is an ear protection zone; and (b) employees must wear suitable approved
ear protectors while in zone.

6.2 Dust control of drilling

- Spraying water to drilling area when drilling
- Enclosed the drilling operation area by tarpaulin to limit soil dust
transmission.
