Identifying Regions

of Areas Under
the Normal Curve
Competencies
 Express the areas under the normal curve as probabilities or
percentages.
 Determine the areas under the normal curve given z-values.

Statistics and Probability Ms. Ehla Grace Y. Boticario

Using the z – table, we can
determine specific regions under the
normal curve. Since the z – table provides
the proportion of the area (or probability
or percentage) between any two specific
values under the curve, regions under the
curve can be described in terms of area.

Example:
Find the area that is located
between z = 0 and each of the following
z-values:

1. z = 1.96
2. z = - 1.15

Statistics and Probability Ms. Ehla Grace Y. Boticario

Solution:
1. If z = 1.96

Steps Solution
1. Write the given as a three-digit z = 1.96
number.
2. Find the first two digits in row 1.9.
Locate the third digit in column 0.06.
3. Take the area value at the This area is 0.4750 or
intersection of row 1.9 and column 47.50%
0.06. Sketch the graph.

0.4750 or 47.50%

Solution:
2. Let us take z = -1.15
Steps Solution
1. Write the given as a three-digit z = - 1.15
number.
2. Find the first two digits in row 1.1
Locate the third digit in column 0.05.
3. Take the area value at the This area is 0.3749 or
intersection of row 1.1 and column 37.49%.
0.05. Sketch the graph.

0.3749 or 37.49%.

Note: When z is negative, we simply ignore the negative

sign and proceed as before. The negative sign informs us
that the region we are interested in is found on the left side
of the mean.

The area under the normal curve
between z
Example:
Find the area of the region between
z = 1 and z = 2.
 To find the area of the region between z = 1 and z = 2, find first
the area and subtract the area of z = 1 from z = 2 to get the area.
z = 1 = .3413 , z = 2 = .4772
Solution:
.4772 – .3413 = .1359 or 13.59%

An example is graphically shown below.

Middle regions under the
normal curve
Example:
Find the total area between z = - 1 and z = 1.

 To find the total area of the region between z = - 1 and

z = 1, find first the area and add to get the total area.
z = - 1 = .3413 , z = 1 = .3413
Solution:
.3413 + .3413 = .6826 or 68.26%
