Manufacturing of single point cutting tool

Objective: To perform the grinding operation for manufacturing of single point cutting tool

Theory:

A tool that has a single point for cutting purpose is called single point cutting tool. It is generally
used in the lathe machine, shaper machine etc. To remove excess materials from the workpiece, a
wedge-shaped cutting tool is employed. The relative motion between the workpiece and this cutting
tool causes shearing that removes excess layer of material to produce desired object.

The single point tool consists of three tool point surfaces. All the three surfaces are plain surfaces.
The top surface has two rake angles because it can cut both into and along the workpiece. The
angles are identified as side rake angle and back rake angle. A greater rake angle reduces cutting
forces and gives a better tool life.

The various angles of the single point cutting tool have great importance. Each angle has its own
function.

Precautions:
1. After every grinding, we need to put the metal to the water for safety of the hand
because of the increasing temperature of the metal.
2. We must use paper or cloth piece to hold the metal for heat.
3. We must have a distance of hand with the grinding machine for safety.
4. We must wear apron and glass for safety.
