LCN CABLE AND FITTINGS

Background There have been many problems caused by the LCN CABLING
instructions not being followed. The instructions are found in the Site
Planning & Installation Instructions for each release.
 Do not substitute unauthorized cables.
 Minimum LCN cable length between nodes is 2-meters.
 Maximum length is 300 meters and 40 nodes for any coaxial bus
segment.
 The BNC tee connectors used by the LCN are not the same as
used by the Data Hiway and must not be mixed.
 The 75 ohm terminators required at each end of the coax are the
same as those used by the Data Hiway.
 LCN coax cannot be routed outside of a building.
 LCN coax cable must never be spliced.
All LCN coax cables supplied by Honeywell now have cylindrical ferrites
installed at each end for EMI suppression to meet the European
Compliance “EC” standard. The cylindrical ferrites have no effect on
normal LCN communication so the new and old style cables can be used
together.

Cable The following cables come as pairs, the "A" cable has a Yellow band on
the BNC connectors and the "B" cable has a Green band on the
connectors (See PD23B03B). RG59 (20 awg) coax cable sets only come
in 2 meter lengths to be used between nodes in the same cabinet. See
Table 1. Table 2 on the next page shows the standard lengths that
Honeywell supplies RG11 (14 awg) coax cable sets.

Cable, Continued The RG11 coax cable should be used wherever the RG59 2-meter cable
cannot reach. The available standard lengths are shown in Table 2.
Custom lengths can also be ordered, but there will be a longer delivery time.
For a custom length, order 51308112-xxx, where xxx = the length in meters
of the cable pair desired.

Notes  Standard 75 ohm terminator with 7" ground wire attached with ring lug.
Intended to provide ground for LCN coax cable when only GUS MAUs are
present on the LCN cable. See PD 19 A99 (B) for more details.
 Some LCN tees now come with a square body similar to Hiway tees. The LCN
body is smaller than the Hiway tee body. See "PD 07 C03 (D)" for instructions
on how to determine if the tee is for LCN or has resistors for the Hiway.

Ferrite Repair If a cylindrical ferrite breaks, a user can replace it with a split style ferrite
shown in Table 4. Because the ferrite is split, the BNC connector does not
have to be removed to install the new ferrite. If the cable is connected, it
does not have to be disconnected to install the new ferrite. The tab -101 will
fit all large cables and the tab -102 will fit all small cables.

Cylindrical If a user wants to replace a cylindrical ferrite with the same kind of ferrite, it
ferrites must be replaced by our cable vendor. Honeywell does not have the
cylindrical ferrites for the coax cable available. Table 5 lists suppliers of the
cylindrical ferrites. Any equivalent cylindrical ferrites could be used.
