DISABILITY: GIFT OR A CURSE?

A Literary critical analysis on Freddie Aguilar “Bulag, Pipi, at Bingi”

The literary piece Bulag, Pipi, at Bingi is a Filipino song. This song was

composed by Freddie Aguilar and was released on July 29, 1993. Bulag, Pipi, at Bingi is

about the true characters of people who are not literally blind, deaf, or mute. Oftentimes

we are no different from those whom we label as blind, deaf, and mute. It seems like we

are the ones who are blind, deaf , and mute based on our actions. Sometimes having

those disabilities can either be a gift and a curse at the same time.

The song relates the story of the three less fortunate people in society; the blind

“Bulag”, the mute, “Pipi,” and the deaf “Bingi.” The song highlights the difficulties that

individuals with disabilities encounter and emphasizes the need for sympathy and

acceptance in society in order to foster compassion and respect for them. It urges

listeners to embrace the value and potential of people with disabilities and to open their

hearts to them. This has also opened the eyes of society to the difference that a person

with a disability can make and their advantages over people who are in good condition.
In the end, The song promotes acceptance of all people, regardless of their

extraordinary talents.

This song speaks about the challenges and discrimination faced by individuals

with disabilities who are blind (bulag), mute (pipi), and deaf (bingi). It emphasizes

people who are marginalized and neglected by our society because of their disabilities.

Regardless of disability status, everyone possesses unique talents and abilities and

deserves the right to play an active role in society. Their worth should not be

underestimated (Kathleen, 2022). People with disabilities are engaged, and we provide

them with opportunities to learn, work, and play alongside everyone else. In fact, they

are more powerful than normal people; they are gifted. They show us what it means to

be human, and they teach us acceptance, humility, and compassion (Halil, 2022). There

is no greater stimulus to achieving a sense of human dignity than for a person with a

disability to become valuable and to be appreciated on the strength of that.

This can be viewed as a powerful commentary on the societal issues faced by

individuals with disabilities. This can also be analyzed to reveal how these attitudes

contribute to the isolation of those with disabilities and the need for societal change.

This can be seen as a call for greater empathy and inclusion of people with disabilities

in society, emphasizing the importance of recognizing their talents and capabilities. This

song can also act as motivation for promoting a more welcoming and inclusive society.

It inspires us to strive toward establishing a setting in which people with disabilities can
thrive, be active participants in all aspects of life, and be valued for their unique qualities

by bringing awareness to the difficulties and injustices they encounter.
