YEARBOOK CRITIQUE
In groups of 2-3, browse through the old SMT yearbooks. Complete the chart below (one per group).

Yearbook year (i.e. Describe what you liked from the yearbook. Comment on the design

2020-2021) elements such as text, colours, graphics, layouts, and photos.

2021-2022 The yearbook page about dance looks very well-organized and 42
professional. Photos are well coordinated with each other. Pictures have
a dominant photo and the theme is as follows.
2021-2022 The student portraits are placed in a consistent measurement and 4-21
location. The background is decent and does not distract the viewer.
The design of the layout is placed and sized in a readable manner and
still not causing any disturbance to the viewer but adds aesthetic and
does not stand out too much.
2021-2022 The Halloween page is really well-made. The fonts of the letters are 26-27
really good and in accordance with the main subject. The pictures are
organized perfectly in my opinion. I like the background because it does
not strain the eyes nor contrast anything with the pictures.
2015-2016 Although the title of the page is on the right side of the page, it still 46-47
looks alright in my opinion. The choice in pictures are well-made but the
way the pictures are taken adds an unnecessary part in the background.
What I like the most about the page is that it looks visually appealing
and colorful.
2015-2016 I absolutely love the choice in colors. The fonts are not the plain color 110-116
black. Not painful to the eyes and is a great choice in color. The way it is
arranged is nice.
2019-2020 I like the color here and the interaction it has with the background. The 48-49
choice of pictures also interact with the background and the other
elements in the pages. Overall, it looks great and nothing problematic.
2019-2020 I particularly like the yellow with the black background since it makes a 51
glowing effect. Then the pictures are bright which makes it look like it
really is glowing.
2019-2020 The pictures are in right sizes except for one which makes the pages 58-59
look inconsistent, though not much damage. The layout is decent but
plain and simple.
2019-2020 The background is a great choice since it is complimentary with the 60-61
photos having trees in their backgrounds. I like the design for the title
page also.
2021-2022 This part of the yearbook looks so much like a magazine and I like the 52-53
way it looks. The choice of pictures and the formatting are perfect. Only
issue is the texts because they are all too close to the borders of the
shape it is in.
Write down ideas your group would like to cover in the 2023-2024 yearbook. Make sure to list lots, we will all
vote what actually makes it in later, so the more ideas the better! We have a lot of pages to cover. Then,
chime in below with ideas you like about graphics and colours. We DO NOT have to stick to SMT colours, we
can make the book whatever design and color we would like.

Student Life:
For the Student Life category in the yearbook, I think the future yearbook designers should consider adding
more theme elements to the event pages such as halloween, spirit week, christmas, etc. I also suggest that
the yearbook page backgrounds change to fun looking patterns related to the yearbook page themes
because gradients and solid colors are too simple.

Academic:
In the Academic part of the yearbook they should try to organize the students by grade levels in alphabetical
orders as well.

Clubs:
For the clubs, I’d recommend adding more personality to the pages using vector graphics or elements to the
pages. The robotics part of the yearbook needs more theme elements related to its page to look more
creative and pleasing to the readers’ eyes.

Sports:

In the sports section, I recommend changing the overall font style and size in the pages, because most of the
texts are almost overlapping with the shapes of the background, when there should be more space given to
the text for easier readability. There are also unnecessary lines or shapes on top of the pictures that ruin the
photo quality.

Design ideas:

For the design ideas, I recommend changing the font style of the texts since they are too plain. Make sure to
keep it formal and readable. The colors have to be complimenting with the images, texts, or any other
elements added in the page
