MATERIALS RESISTANCE WORKSHOP

STUDENT NAME: Pablo Alejandro Poblete Cabezas

Assume the following situation:

A crane lifts a beam of mass 1500kg. With a 10mm steel cable. In diameter,
which supports a tension "T" = 4925 Newton.

Requested,

1. Draw the free body diagram and identify the forces interacting in the sys-
tem.

2. Draw the reference frame and identify the forces with vectors T and P.
Answer 1 and 2:

T: tension

acceleration

P: weight
3. Calculate the maximum acceleration at which the beam can be lifted.
Response:

∑F=M.A

4925N-1500KG X 9.81 M/S2

A= -6.52M/S2.

The cable cannot lift the beam with 4925N (exceeds elastic limit).

2m/s2
4. Calculate the voltage "T" with an acceleration of .
Response:

T-MG=MA

T-1500KG X 9.81 M/S2 = 1500KG X 2M/S2

T=17715N.

5. Explain what happens to the tension if it is lifted at an acceleration

greater than the maximum allowable.
Response:

The tension should logically increase because the increase in lifting force
is directly related to a higher acceleration.

6. Calculate the elongation of the cable with a length of 10m.

Response:

∆=PLo / AE

A =TTr² =TT(0.01m/2)² = 3.1415*10-⁴m².

P = 17715 N
Lo = 10m
E = 2.1X10⁶kg/cm2 = 2.1*10¹⁰kg/m² = 2.1*10¹⁰kg/m².
Δl = 17715 NX10m/3.1415*10-⁴m²X2.1X10¹⁰kg/m².
Δl = 0.027m
7. Explain what happens if the cable diameter is increased.
Response:

In the event that the diameter of the cable increases, the resistance of the
cable will logically increase and the cable will become less elongated when
using the crane.
