Information about the author :

Lorena Rodríguez K. (1973) Born in Viña del Mar. He studied Graphic Design at the
Universidad del Pacífico and later Pedagogy at the Alberto Hurtado University. For the last
thirteen years she has dedicated herself to promoting reading in the library of the Sagrado
Corazón Monjas Inglesas school, developing the pleasure of reading in her students. Today she
is dedicated exclusively to writing. The Port Travelers is his first novel.

Summary of the work:

The Port Travelers tells the story of three siblings: Elena, Tomás and Ignacio who went to spend
their summer vacations at their grandparents' house –Elisa and Hernán– and Amelia, Elisa's
nonagenarian mother, located in Valparaíso, while their parents were traveling to Europe. The
plot takes place in two times: between the past and the present.
The grandparents' house is located on Yerbas Buenas Street, on Bellavista Hill in Valparaíso. It
is a three-story house, to get to it you have to climb many stairs. Young people do not want to
spend the holidays at home because they believe it is boring, since they will be without internet
and video games. Elena, the eldest daughter, feels sad because all her friends from school are
in Pucón. However, she entertains herself using social media on her cell phone and listening to
the stories her great-grandmother tells.
The adventure begins two weeks later, when Ignacio finds a board game hidden in a secret
compartment, located in a piece of furniture in the room he shares with his brother. When
playing, the three brothers moved to Valparaíso in 1932. In the city, they know the Gran Hotel Il
Viaggiatore, which had been installed by their nana Amelia's mother. This hotel had to close
due to the installation of the Panama Canal, which decreased the transit of ships through the
Pacific Ocean and along the coastal area of Chile.
In the present, the grandparents are involved in a dilemma, because a housing company wants
to buy the land to build new buildings. The grandfather is threatened by the buyers, who warned
him not to make trouble and sell his home.
The young people, in the past, are faced with discovering their mission in the past, so they
begin to investigate what is happening in the Grand Hotel, since they have no guests. Elena
realizes that she looks like Amelia's twin sister, her grandmother, so she has to hide. His
brothers get jobs as shoe shiners and hotel staff.

The grandparents in the present, when threatened by strangers who enter their home and faced
with the kidnapping of the family of one of the construction company workers, decide to sign an
agreement to sell the house. Upon arriving at the notary's office, the worker confronts his boss
and helps the grandparents escape, thus preserving the family home.
In the past, the young people discover that their mission is to save the family hotel, to do so they
notify Amelia and her mother, they tell them that they come from the future to help them. In
addition, they have the help of Francisco, a young man who traveled from the future through
another game board. Both the young man and his brothers have to support their families to
protect the hotels and thus solve future problems.

A figure stood out in front of the door of the Il Viaggiatore hotel. The street, deserted at that
hour of the morning, was cold. Standing there, she thought about her arrival at the port the day
before.
His return had been sad. For a moment she imagined that her mother was going to pick her
up, but no matter how hard she looked for her in the crowd that gathered around the travelers,
she couldn't make out her face. When he didn't see her, he immediately knew: he had forgotten
about her, probably distracted by her new husband.
He felt the same pain again, he hugged his body, covering his arms with his hands.

anyone else to make their hotel the most famous in the port. If she managed to erase Carlota
and her Italian hotel from the block, Mother would finally understand that she couldn't put her
aside, that she needed her and that together they were invincible. Could I achieve it?

Without understanding what was happening, and feeling as if he were being sucked in by a
huge vacuum cleaner, Tomás suddenly appeared dressed as a sailor on a street that was totally
unknown to him. Very scared, he looked everywhere to understand what was happening.
In the midst of his fear, he clenched his fists and felt something inside his right hand: he still
had the game dice.
“But what do you think… where am I?” he asked himself. He began to walk as he felt his
heart pounding inside his chest. Everything looked strange: the people were dressed in a
curious way, the street was made of cobblestones instead of pavement, he didn't see any cars
coming, but he saw a cart passing by. Another thing that caught his attention was the silence. It
seemed like one of those holidays when you can't hear the noise of engines, horns, or the
speeding of buses in the streets; just the coming and going of people.
Suddenly, a Bugatti 41 Royale appeared in the middle of the street. Tomás knew that car
well because he had been in a vintage car parade with his grandfather. “Did the Antique Car
Club take to the streets again?” he thought.
In the distance, he heard the sound of a ship's horn. He realized that he was in a port, but
not one that he knew. When he reached the corner, a boy offered him a newspaper: El Mercurio
de Valparaíso. With the feeling of not having enough air to breathe, Tomás read the date printed

commented out loud that he wanted to take a step, when the guard began to follow him he
would discover that the laces of his shoes had become tied together. Whatever activity the
grandparents wanted to do, it was enough for them to mention it out loud for the watchman on
duty to have some impediment: an insistent stitch in his back, an uncontrollable urge to go to
the bathroom or a gust of wind that suddenly prevented him from doing it. keep your eyes open.

to 24.

Luz had a sixteen-year-old daughter named Bruna. The young woman had arrived from
Brazil with her mother when she was a child, but she kept the charm and rhythm of Rio in her
blood. With a matte complexion, abundant curly honey-colored hair, green eyes and thick lips,
Bruna was an exuberant girl, even more so for 1932, when modesty was an essential quality in
“decent” young girls. She was also a very intelligent girl and knew what she had to do to achieve
her goals, so upon returning from her last stay in Brazil her attitude had completely changed.
Her hair, previously unruly and with free curls down to her waist, was now always properly
tied up under the nape of her neck; Her clothes, previously more daring than recommended,
were now almost childish, with a touch of delicacy and correctness that was approved by
Richard and the hotel's neighbors. They all saw how this little girl had finally come to her senses
and assumed that the presence of a father was what had made her finally become a “correct”
girl.
While playing her role, Bruna missed her country, its freedom, its carnivals and the warm
water of its beaches. Therefore, when he saw Francisco enter the dining room, he knew that he
finally had something to entertain himself. His gaze darkened as he looked at the boy who,
distracted, asked for a cup of coffee. She approached the table and sat in front of him with a
carefully studied look, full of innocence.

21. According to the fragment, being a “proper” girl in 1932 meant:

a. Be modest and orderly.
b. The presence of a father.
c. Meet standards.
d. Be delicate and welcoming.
22. Bruna approaches Francisco because
a. You find it will be a distraction.
b. She's a little excited about him.
c. She believes that he will become her friend.
d. She is bored in the city.

23. In relation to the text, the indispensable word, highlighted in the fragment, can be
changed by the following synonym:
a. Essential.
b. Essential.
c. Inexcusable.
d. Irreplaceable.

24. How did Bruna feel in Chile?

a. Overwhelmed by the changes.
b. Proud to be in the country.
c. Hopeful with the changes.
d. Resentful of life.
