Abstract
Bontang PSC requested that Elnusa Geosains Navigation department undertake an
additional bathymetry program in the Tutung Block during the course of the seismic operations taking
place in this area. This was to facilitate future movement of rigs in the area. A set of co-ordinates
defining a rectangle was provided (see below) and from this a grid of lines running east-west and
north-south was generated. Bathymetry acquisition was to be made to a maximum depth of 3.5m LAT.
It was decided to acquire data to an approximate depth of 6m MSL in order to be sure the clients’
requirements were met. Initially the lines running east to west were spaced every 50m but this was
increased to every 100m as it was thought this would provide adequate data. The north to south lines
were spaced every 500m and basically served as a cross check on the data acquired from the east-
west lines. Separate data acquisition was made for the four reef areas in the zone.
Two Castor boats were used for the bathymetry acquisition which took place between the 29th
of March and the 9th of April. Prior to operations commencing the Odom Hydrotrac echo-sounders had
been calibrated and the Thales Sagitta-02 DGPS receivers checked. See the calibration section of this
report for more details.
The navigation system used for this bathymetry program was SERCEL medium range portable
Differential GPS station bi-frequency type NDS200 with Thales Sagitta-02 DGPS receivers installed on
board the bathymetry vessels.

Data Processing
Raw data files were processed in the Navigation office on the Standard barge. Initially data
was checked for any bad or missing data and then the real time tidal values were applied to the real
time water depths to compute a final MSL depth for each recorded point.
Data was then entered into both an ArcGIS and Surfer database. ArcGIS software was used
both to cross check data and to produce final maps. Surfer software was used to produce grids using
the Kriging method. These grids were then used to produce contour maps which were finally exported
in DXF format.

For the Sagitta-2 receivers installed on board Castor 13 and Castor 14, data was recorded independently with
the Gator navigation system in SPS file format every 10 seconds for between ten and fifteen minutes. Please note
that the Gator system rounds off the coordinates to the nearest ten centimetres.
th
Data was acquired on the 25 of March. Differential corrections were broadcast using a Sercel NDS200MR
differential station located on geodetic reference point 16288.
In order to verify geodetic parameters entered into the Gator INS the following test point (IGS-01 geodetic point
known in both systems) was converted using the Gator Utility Node Coordinate Conversion facility:
