INTERACTIVE ACTIVITY: NAMING AND WRITING

CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS
OBJECTIVE:

To enhance students' understanding and application of the rules for naming

and writing chemical compounds.

ACTIVITY: CHEMICAL COMPOUND CARD GAME

Materials Needed:

• Deck of cards with chemical formulas on one side and compound names
on the other.
• Timer

Instructions:

1. Setup:

◦ Divide the students into small groups (3-4 students per group).
◦ Provide each group with a deck of cards.

2. Game Play:

◦ Shuffle the deck and place it formula side up.

◦ The top card is flipped over to reveal the chemical formula.
◦ The first student to correctly name the compound gets to keep the
card.
◦ The next card is then flipped and the game continues.
◦ After all the cards have been used, the student with the most cards
wins.

3. Variation:

◦ Play the game in reverse. This time, the name of the compound is
shown and students must write the correct chemical formula.
4. Discussion:

◦ After the game, discuss any compounds that were particularly

challenging. Review the rules for naming and writing formulas for
those compounds.

BENEFITS:

• The activity promotes active learning and engagement.

• It provides immediate feedback, allowing students to correct
misconceptions.
• The competitive nature of the game motivates students to participate
and reinforces their learning.

TIPS:

• Ensure that the deck of cards includes a variety of compounds, including

both ionic and covalent compounds.
• For an added challenge, include polyatomic ions and transition metals
with varying oxidation states in the deck.
