 AC Load Line
 Linear Amplifiers
 Common Emitter Amplifier

 Common Base Amplifier
 Multistage & Differential Amplifier
 Summary
BJT Amplifiers

 Input signal applied to Base & inverted Output taken from

Collector , Emitter common to ac signals
BJT Amplifiers

 Common-Collector Amplifier : (Emitter-Follower) has Voltage

gain of approx 1
 Has High Input Resistance & Current Gain
 Input applied to Base & Output from Emitter
BJT Amplifiers

 CB Amplifier : Used in low input impedance applications

 Output Signal Not Inverted : Advantage for Higher Frequencies
due Miller effects
 C2 forces Base to be at ac ground
BJT Amplifiers

 Common-Emitter Amplifier with Voltage-Divider Bias

 Coupling Capacitors C1 & C3 at input & output
 Bypass Capacitor C2 from Emitter to ground
 Input signal, Vin : Capacitively coupled to Base
 Output Signal Vout : Capacitively coupled from collector to
load
 Amplified Output 180° out of phase with input
 Output taken from Collector terminal
BJT Amplifiers

 Phase Inversion: Output Signal Out of Phase with Input

signal
 As Input Signal Changes, Causes ac Base Current to Change,
resulting Change in Collector Current from its Q-point
 If Base Current Increases, Collector Current Increases causing
increase in Voltage Drop across RC
 Increase in voltage across RC means : Voltage at Collector
decreases from its Q-point
 Change in Input Signal Voltage results in Opposite Change in
Collector Signal voltage causing Phase Inversion

 Greater gain stability can be achieved by adding swamping resistor to
emitter circuit of CE amplifier
 Gain will be lower as a result
Example
What is the gain with addition of
swamping resistor?

Common-Emitter Amplifier
 In addition to gain stability, swamping has advantage of increasing ac input
resistance of the amplifier

Rin(tot) = R1||R2||bac(re' + RE1)

Example
What is Rin(tot) for the amplifier if
bac = 200?
Rin(tot) = R1||R2||bac(re' + RE1)
= 68 kW||27 kW||200(15.4 W + 33 W)
= 6.45 kW
