ONION PROFILE IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF BAYAMBANG

Onions are the most market-sensitive agri-commodity known for its huge price
volatility. Because of its economic value, farmers in the municipality are still taking risks in
the onion production industry even though they experienced army worm infestation in
2016, and various extents of area damage every year.

Based on data from the Municipal Agriculture Office of Bayambang, Pangasinan,

about 1500.0 to 2000.0 has of land are being planted with onion for the months of
September, October, November, December, January, and February. More and more
farmers are choosing to engage in the onion industry because they believe in the saying
“If you want to become rich, plant onions; if you want to become poor, plant onions.”

Farmers in Bayambang are mostly practicing conventional farming. The cost of

production /has for onion is about Php200,000.00, given good weather condition and no
infestations. On the other hand, the minimum cost of production can rapidly increase
due to the pest and disease resurgence. In addition, the cost of other farming necessities
such as labor or man-days payment, and farm inputs and materials such as fuel and
fertilizer, are increasing.
The onion farming economic industry in
Bayambang values at around
Php675,000,000 to Php1,125,000,000.00
when the market price ranges from 30
pesos to 50 pesos.
