CHAPTER I

RESEARCH PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

In traditional classrooms, thus it is believed that teachers can give students

immediate face-to-face feedback. Thus, personalized feedback has a positive

impact on students, as it makes learning processes easier, richer, and more

significant, all the while raising the motivation levels of the students.

Meanwhile Gill et al.(2013) identify blogs as one of the most

useful media for personally expressing views on current issues and

encourages individuals to start a blog with the purpose of sharing their online

reader. From an education point of view, the motivational use of blogs in

academic contexts by moving the class out of the classroom and conducting

discussion forums is considered crucial to promote communication and

reflection among students (Halic et al. 2014).

Concurrently, EduBlog is an example of a blog site that may

assist the users with the information that they need. In these circumstances,

student’ motivation can be reflected in levels of active participation through

networking practices and development of communication skills.

However, making a blog is too complicated; thus, bloggers

sometimes produce articles that are insignificant. For instance, poor blog

writing can lead to misunderstandings. Many students and teachers use blogs

to expand their knowledge but on the other hand some of them

misunderstood the information given by blogs. Edublog has tremendous

educational potential but users should be aware of their downside.

Thus, this research is conducted. This paper focuses on the analysis

of EduBlogs as a tool in the teaching learning process in the senior high

context. The impacts and importance of the website in and outside the

classroom will be discussed, too.

Statement of the Problem

This study used by the (Input-Process-Output) A conceptual framework

for Edublog and Its Impact in the Group performance of Grade 11 students in

Balayan Senior High School Academic Year 2022-2023 refers to a set of

interrelated concepts, assumptions, and theories that guide the design,

development, and use of blogs in educational settings. This framework can

help educators and learners understand the potential benefits and challenges

of using edublogs and guide the development of effective blogging practices.

At the core of the conceptual framework for Edublogs and Its Impact is the

idea that blogs can serve as a powerful tool for fostering reflection,

collaboration, and communication among learners and teachers. By providing

a platform for sharing ideas, insights, and feedback, edublogs can help

learners develop critical thinking skills, deepen their understanding of course

material, and build a sense of community and engagement with their peers.

The framework also emphasizes the importance of scaffolding and

supporting learners as they engage with edublogs. This includes providing

clear guidelines and expectations for blog posts, providing feedback and

guidance on the quality of posts, and fostering a supportive and respectful

online community.

Overall, the conceptual framework for edublogs emphasizes the

potential of blogs as a tool for fostering critical thinking, reflection, and

collaboration in educational settings, while also recognizing the need for

careful guidance and support to ensure their effective use.

POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE

A blog made specifically for education is known as an edublog. Edublogs

serve as learning archives and enhance teacher and student learning by

encouraging self- and other-reflection, teamwork, and settings for higher-

order thinking.

This tool is useful for more than just teaching students how to blog. It may be

used to create portfolios, manage project progress, write lab reports, or

create newsletters. Edublogs can be used to any subject matter.

Also, it offers students the chance to work together on poetry, different writing

assignments, or reading. Students might initially reply to the material by

sharing their ideas, emotions, connections, and questions. Other pupils would

have the chance to comment to others' replies. This would spark discussion

among the students and help them hone their analytical and critical thinking

abilities.

According to (Yue & Brooks, 2007) Blogging may be seen as a flexible tool

that improves the learning methods used in large-cohort university instruction.

However, this is not free some negative due to its mandatory nature of task

and requirements of more explicit direction and validation in the writing of

students own academic Blog. (Hourigan & Murray, 2010)

Based on (Edwards, 2023) The advantage of Edublog over websites like

Wordpress include levels of control that offer more protection for student data

and simpler instructor monitoring. This is widely available across platforms

and is accessible as an app and as a web-based service. Because of this,

students may be able to update their blogs whenever they want outside of

class using their own devices in addition to working on them in class.

Prospective students and new instructors can use the EduBlog as an

accurate overview of the course. The Students might be inspired to read

more and encouraged to strengthen their morals by using EduBlog. Blogs

might be used to highlight the range of learning styles and personal

preferences in the classroom. Additionally, For both instructors and students,

EduBlog offers a number of benefits. Some advantages include the ease with

which a class website may be quickly and easily created, the encouragement

of class involvement and debate, the availability of a forum for student

expression and information sharing, and the ease with which it can be

done.Blogging is an excellent way for learners to communicate with one

based context through technology (Lamonica, 2010, p. 5). Using blogs makes

learners’ writing more participatory and more focused on everyday language

use (Penrod, 2007; Boling, 2008; Higginson, 2009; Stanley, 2013). Research

studies reveal that blogs play a considerable role in improving learner

reflection, classroom dialogue and social networking (Ray & Hocutt, 2006;

Khourey-Brown, 2005; Efimova & de Moor, 2005). Furthermore, Blogs also

enhance the writing skills of elementary, intermediate and secondary school

students (Glewa & Bogan, 2007; Lomicky & Hossain, 2008).

(Pahl & Rowsell, 2005). According to sociocultural theory, literacy is as a

socially based practice and is mediated by a person’s culture (Larson &

Marsh, 2005). It can be enhanced through dialogue, discussion and

storytelling. This creates self-expression and helps students discuss their

ideas and then put them in writing either individually, in pairs or in a group. In

this sense, blogging per se is not technology; rather, it is literacy, which

underscores the strengths of authentic writing. Collaborative writing becomes

a key issue at school that students should be engaged in (Boling et al., 2008).

Unlike traditional methods of teaching writing skills, blogging introduces

students to conversation, interaction, communication and debate before the

actual writing stage. Therefore, Many teachers unfortunately limit themselves

to using a paper-and-pencil method to teach a writing class, but this often

seems desultory (Barone & Wright, 2008). Blogging also gives students a

personal purpose that makes writing more engaging than the academic

critical thinking adopted by most curricula (Boling, 2008)

Edublogs are educational blogs that are specifically designed for students

and educators to share their thoughts, ideas, and experiences related to

learning. Research has shown that there are several positive ways in which

students can use edublogs to enhance their learning experiences.

Firstly, edublogs provide students with a platform to reflect on their learning.

According to Elsayed and aware, and improve their writing abilities. By writing

reflective posts on their edublogs, students can Strutton (2015), reflective

writing helps students to develop critical thinking skills, become more self-

articulate their thoughts and reflect on their learning experiences.

Secondly, edublogs allow students to collaborate with their peers. According

to Akcaoglu and Bowman (2016), blogging can be used to facilitate

communication and collaboration among students. By commenting on each

other’s posts, students can share their ideas, ask questions, and provide

feedback, thereby creating a collaborative learning environment.

Thirdly, edublogs can be used to showcase student work. According to Hsu

(2015), edublogs can serve as a portfolio of student work, providing students

with a platform to showcase their achievements and progress over time. This

can help to motivate students to take ownership of their learning and strive for

excellence.

14
Fourthly, edublogs can help students develop digital literacy skills. According

to Chen and Huang (2014), blogging can help students develop skills in

digital communication, online collaboration, and media production. By using

edublogs, students can learn how to create and publish digital content, and

engage with online communities in a safe and responsible manner.

Finally, edublogs can be used to promote active learning. According to Liu

and Liu (2015), blogging can help to promote active learning by encouraging

students to take responsibility for their own learning, engage with course

materials, and share their insights with their peers. By using edublogs,

students can become more actively engaged in their learning and develop a

deeper understanding of the course material.

In conclusion, edublogs offer several positive benefits for students, including

providing a platform for reflection, collaboration, showcasing student work,

developing digital literacy skills, and promoting active learning. These benefits

suggest that edublogs can be a valuable tool for educators seeking to

enhance student learning experiences.

This chapter presents the review of related literature and studies after

thorough and in-depth search done by the researchers.

Synthesis

An edublog is a blog created especially for educational purposes. Edublogs

act as learning archives and improve teacher and student learning by

promoting mutual reflection, teamwork, and environments that foster higher-

order thinking (Martin & Shanna , 2020)This resource can be used for more

than just instructing kids on how to blog. It can be used to make portfolios,

track the advancement of projects, write lab reports, or make newsletters.

Any subject matter is appropriate for edublogs. Additionally, it gives Students

the opportunity to collaborate on poetry, various writing assignments, or

reading. In their early responses to the material, students may share their

thoughts, feelings, connections, and inquiries. Other students would be given

the opportunity to remark on others' responses. The students' analytical skills

would be strengthened and conversation would be sparked.

(Yue & Brooks, EduBlog Its feature, 2008) blogging may be viewed as a versatile

instrument that enhances the teaching strategies utilized in university

instruction for big cohorts. Due to the necessary character of the assignment

and the need for clearer guidance and validation in the creation of students'

own academic blogs, this is not without some drawbacks. (Hourigan &

According to (Edwards, 2023) Edublog has certain advantages over websites

like Wordpress, including as control settings that provide greater privacy for

student data and easier teacher monitoring. This is generally accessible

across platforms and is provided as a web-based service and an app. As a

result, in addition to working in class, students may be able to update their

blogs anytime they wish using their own devices outside of class.

The EduBlog provides a thorough description of the course for both new

teachers and prospective students. By using EduBlog, the students could be

motivated to read more and urged to improve their values. The variety of

learning styles and personal preferences in the classroom may be highlighted

through blogs. EduBlog also provides a variety of advantages for instructors

and students. The simplicity with which a class website can be quickly and

easily created, the encouragement of class participation and debate, the

availability of a forum for student expression and information sharing, and the

ease with which it can be done are a few benefits.

Effective collaboration within a group is crucial for enhancing group

performance. To facilitate this, it is important to establish clear goals and

roles, ensuring that each member understands their responsibilities and how

they contribute to the overall project. Open and transparent communication

channels should be established, promoting active listening, idea sharing, and

feedback. Collaboration tools and technologies can be utilized to facilitate

communication and document sharing. Norms and guidelines should be

established to guide the group's behavior and decision-making processes.

Equal participation should be encouraged, giving everyone the opportunity to

contribute and rotate leadership roles. Conflict resolution should be

addressed constructively, focusing on finding solutions and maintaining a

positive collaborative environment. Finally, it is important to recognize and

celebrate achievements, boosting motivation and fostering a sense of

accomplishment within the group.

4.1 Fostering Enhanced Engagement through Edublog

Edublogs, or educational blogs, offer a powerful avenue for fostering

enhanced engagement in education. Students can create their own

blogs, providing them with a platform to share their thoughts,

reflections, and creative ideas. This process of self-expression allows

students to take ownership of their learning journey and develop their

communication skills. By encouraging regular blog posts, teachers can

prompt students to reflect on their learning experiences, articulate their

understanding of concepts, and explore their interests. This active

engagement promotes a deeper level of thinking and helps students

develop a sense of autonomy and agency in their education.

Incorporating multimedia content into edublogs adds depth and variety

to the learning experience. Students can utilize images, videos, audio

recordings, and interactive elements to enhance their blog posts and

communicate their ideas effectively. By using different media formats,

students can cater to diverse learning styles and engage their peers in

a more interactive manner. This fosters creativity, digital literacy, and

technological proficiency, skills that are highly valuable in today's digital

age.

Edublogs also promote collaboration and interaction among students.

By enabling comments and discussions on blog posts, students can

engage in meaningful conversations, provide feedback to their peers,

and learn from different perspectives. This collaborative aspect

encourages active participation and develops important social skills,

such as empathy, respect, and effective communication. Additionally,

edublogs can connect students with a broader audience, including

parents, other students, and experts in various fields, further enriching

the learning experience and instilling a sense of pride and

accomplishment in students as they realize the impact their work can

have on others.

Overall, edublogs foster enhanced engagement in education by

providing students with a platform for self-expression, incorporating

multimedia content, and promoting collaboration and interaction. By

leveraging the power of technology and encouraging active

participation, edublogs create a dynamic learning environment that

inspires students to explore, reflect, create, and connect with others.

production. By using edublogs, students can learn how to create and

publish digital content, and engage with online communities in a safe

and responsible manner.

4.3.1 Knowledge Sharing

Knowledge sharing is the process of exchanging information, ideas,

and expertise among individuals or groups to enhance collective

understanding and capabilities. It plays a crucial role in fostering

learning, problem-solving, and innovation. By sharing knowledge,

individuals can benefit from each other's experiences, insights, and

expertise, avoiding the need to reinvent the wheel and building upon

existing knowledge. It promotes collaboration and strengthens

relationships, as individuals work together towards a common goal,

contributing their unique perspectives and knowledge. Knowledge

sharing is particularly important in educational settings, where teachers

share their knowledge with students, and students engage in

discussions and peer learning to deepen their understanding of the

4.3.3 Interactive and Inclusive

The terms "interactive" and "inclusive" highlight important aspects of

effective learning environments and educational practices. An

interactive learning environment promotes active engagement and

participation among learners, enabling them to interact with the content,

their peers, and instructors. It goes beyond passive listening or reading

and encourages students to ask questions, engage in discussions,

collaborate, and apply their knowledge. Interactive learning fosters

deeper understanding, critical thinking, and the development of

problem-solving skills. It also enhances motivation and enjoyment, as

students are actively involved in the learning process and have

opportunities to explore and discover concepts on their own.

On the other hand, an inclusive learning environment ensures that

every learner feels welcomed, valued, and supported. It acknowledges

and respects the diversity of learners, including their individual

strengths, backgrounds, and learning styles. Inclusive practices involve

adapting teaching methods, materials, and assessments to meet the
