CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Unprecedented circumstances have hampered educational

processes in various learning environments. Public

institutions such as schools, universities and other education

providers ceased onsite teaching, transitioned to distance

learning, or closed down completely. The sudden lockdown

necessitated quick adjustments on the part of all

stakeholders, and both teaching and learning environments were

significantly altered. Even after lockdown conditions in many

countries have been lifted, fundamental changes to the day-to-

day reality of teaching and learning have occurred.

These abrupt changes have had an impact on schools,

families, and society in general. This has frequently

necessitated the adoption of new educational strategies for

digital teaching (synchronous and asynchronous), which is

still a relatively new phenomenon in many educational

settings. For students, the lack of structured in-class

settings and learning materials may have necessitated more

self-regulation and self-motivation to learn with less

support. Furthermore, as some countries have moved to reopen

educational institutions while attempting to maintain social

distance, teachers and students have experienced a variety of

changes in their education settings in a short period of time,

such as changes to physical contact hours, group sizes, and

access to physical spaces or materials

Given these challenges for educators, parents, and most

especially students, it is worthwhile to investigate

supplemental learning tools that may aid students’ education.

This research paper will investigate how podcasts have aided

learning in both formal and informal settings, considering the

students’ educational and psychological perspectives.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The purpose of this research is to assess the

effectiveness of podcast as supplemental learning tool in

improving Learning Engagement and Academic Performance of

Secondary School students.

Research questions will be raised by the researchers and

specifically, will seek the answers to the following

questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 name (optional)

1.2 age

1.3 gender

1.4 average grade

2. How podcasts may support the development and

improvement of the following:

2.1 Students’ Learning Engagement

2.2 Students’ Skills and Interests

3. Is there a significant difference on the support of

podcasts among the respondents when grouped according to their

profile?

4. Is there a significant difference on the support of

podcast among the respondents when grouped according to

Students’ Learning Engagement and Students’ Skills and

Interest?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The results of the study will be of great benefit to the

following:

Teachers

The result would develop the instructor’s teaching and

evaluating strategies in enhancing the students’ knowledge,

skills, and attitudes.

Students

This study explores students’ coping strategies in this new

learning set up; they could find self-fulfillment and gain

learning.

School Administrators

This study will help the school in the development of its

quality education. It would also be of help in the advancement

of school management and teaching evaluation approaches.

Future Researchers

This study will be of tremendous help to other future student

researchers as one of their sources of information that may

add up to their knowledge of how podcasts may aid learning

despite the struggles that we are facing.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The Grades 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 students who are

enrolled at Bayabat National High School (BNHS) in Academic

Year 2021–2022 will be the respondents of this study. The data

collection will be conducted at BNHS by June, with a total

population of 500 students, but only 50 of that population

will be chosen randomly.

This research is designed to assess how podcasts, as a

supplementary learning tool, could support BNHS students’

learning engagement and academic performance.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

The following definitions are provided to ensure

understanding of these terms in a consistent manner throughout

the study.

Academic Performance – a measure of a student’s achievement in

various academic subjects; the level of knowledge shown in an

area or subject is compared to the norm, and is generally

measured using the grade point average.

Learning Engagement – refers to the level of attention,

curiosity, interest, optimism, and passion displayed by

students while learning or being taught, as well as the level

of motivation they have to learn and progress in their

education.

Podcast – a series of spoken word and audio episodes that are

all focused on a particular topic or theme. It is downloadable

and can be listened to-even offline-at any time and any place.

Students – individuals who are registered and recognized as

learners in educational institutions such as schools,

colleges, and universities for the purpose of acquiring

knowledge and skills that will enhance their personal

development and prepare them for the world of work.

Supplementary Learning Tool – an instrument designed to be

used by learners to provide a structure for developing

learning skills and behaviors, as well as collect and think

about key information in a systematic manner.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN

This study will be utilizing a descriptive quantitative

design to obtain the opinions of the respondents to

investigate. The major purpose of descriptive research design

is to provide information on characteristics of a population

or phenomenon (Mugenda & Mugenda, 2003). Descriptive research

is used as a precursor to quantitative research design as it

provides the general overview giving some valuable pointers as

to what variables are worth testing quantitatively, Shirima

(2020).

The implementation of the aforementioned research

methodology in this study would greatly help the researchers

to assess the support of podcast as a supplementary learning

tool on the students’ academic performance and learning

engagement.

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The Grades 10, 11, and 12 students who are enrolled at

Bayabat National High School (BNHS) in Academic Year 2021–2022

will be the respondents of the study.

DATA GATHERING TOOL

According to Fink (2002), there were four strategies of

data gathering. There was questionnaire, an interview, a

structured record review, and a structured observation. In

this study, the researchers will be going to use structured

questionnaire for survey through digital platform particularly

Google forms to collect the information from the respondents.

The questionnaire consists three parts:

Part 1 solicits the following demographic variables from

the students who shall take part on this study: gender, age,

year level, and their average grade. Part 2 is comprised of

items designed to identify the students’ level of agreement on

the support of podcast towards their learning engagement. The

last part of questionnaire consists of items designed to

identify the perception of students in podcast in order to

assess the effectiveness of this tool on skills and interests

development.

The implementation of online survey would help the

researcher to disseminate the questionnaire conveniently and

collect the information from the respondents at the same time.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

Before the actual administration of the questionnaire,

the researcher will seek permission from their research

teacher, class adviser, and also from the principal or the

officer in-charge of BNHS. After this activity, they will

contact the advisers of the Grade 10-12 students from the

institution for an approval. Once approved, the questionnaire

shall be given to 50 students for them to accomplish the

survey questionnaire.

The researcher shall give a time to respondents, at least

three (3) days to complete the instruments. After 3 days, they

shall collect the accomplished survey questionnaire. After the

process, the researcher shall code and tabulate the responses

to the different items in the questionnaire. This will be

followed by the statistical analysis of data and the writing

of report.
