Rolled compacted concrete /RCC/ is the widely used construction

material for gravity dam . . .

Example #1

The profile of an old concrete gravity dam is given below & its structural competence is to be
reviewed in relation to planned remedial work.

Design criteria:
o NLC: water load (to DFL) +self-weight + Uplift + silt.
o Uplift: no provision in original design
Sediment:
o Friction фs =300 ,
o Submerged unit wt γs’ = 15kN/m3 ,
o γw =10kN/m3,.
Concrete characteristics:
o
core samples: γc =24kN/m3
o
Unit shear resistance, C=600kN/m2 ,
o
Internal friction angle, Φc =350.

a) Analyze the stability of the profile w.r.t. plane x-x for the NLC, using shear friction factor,
FSF, for sliding stability & over turning

It has the following characteristics;
 The crest width of 4m found at a level of 252msl
 River bed lowers 115m below dam crest
 The apex of d/s triangular profile having slope of 2H:1V lowers 5m below the dam crest
 The dam has a flare of slope 1H:1V with its apex stretches 42m above the river bed
 At the normal pool level the water surface is found 3m below the dam crest
 Estimated tale water level found 12m above the river floor
 Estimated silt deposit level 14m above river bed
Concrete characteristics
 γc = 24 KN/m3
 Unit shear resistance, C=600kN/m2 ,
 Internal friction angle, Φc =350.
Sediment characteristics
 γs = 20 KN/m3
 internal friction angle фs =300
