OTHER PERSONAL, PROFESSIONAL AND / OR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS

Please use the space below to provide details of any other prizes, awards, qualifications or achievements which you would
like to share.

PERSONAL STATEMENT
Please use this space to explain how your academic background and professional experiences to date relate to your chosen
course and what you expect to gain from studying this course at the University of Westminster (500 words maximum).

My name is Muhammad Khaerul. I have graduated from Islamic State College Univeristy of Watampone in 2014 majoring
English Teaching. I come from a countryside of Watampone regency called kampubbu. I live with middle-sized family with both
my parents, one brother and one little sister. My father is a farmer and my mother is a housekeeper, both of them just have
secondary school certificate.

I have studied the science of grammar deeply for seven months in 2012 in the land of Java at one of the famous english
course, Smart ILC. I studied english grammar here from the basic language prolog up to high-class grammar level. After
accomplishing grammar skill by long and full of struggle, i ultimately comprehend the patterns of English grammar and
structure analysis; thus, understanding other language pattern is not so difficult anymore for me. Eventhough i had left the
university for one semester when i was at the third level to study english grammar in java, but i can finish my course in
university on time.

Extra-campus activity that i struggled after coming from Java is to teach english at Star English Course of Watampone for
more than a couple of years. I taught english grammar as well as speaking. While becoming english instructor at Star English,
my friends and i sometimes held English Camp program at schools for about seven days to introduce basic english learning
for students (mostly high school). From such activities, i can share my knowledge and develop my teaching skill.

When i was in university i actively join in one of the organisation, FKI-Ulul Al Bab, as a place for studying philosophy and
religion. At the time that i studied philosophy in FKI, i found my mind broaden not only about general knowledge and scientific
though my friends and i discussed about but the language theories, such as Derrida, Chomsky and Saussure as well. To
explore more about philosophy, after graduated i went to one of the famous institutions studying philosophy and mystism,
Rausyan Fikr, located in Yogyakarta for about 3 months in 2015. I learnt the basic fundamental of epistemology and logic of
science. Further, with the philosophical approach and epistemology, i will compose a systematic reference and better english
learning module for high school level.

The courses of English Language and Linguistics such as Analyzing Spoken and Written Discourse and Current
Developments in Language Teaching will be beneficial for me to compile Senior High School grammar curriculum in which has
not been arranged in systemic and relative way from one material to others in every grade. In addition, being professional
lecturer in STAIN Watampone after graduated also becomes my future plan which requires updated english lesson and
teaching method. that i will get from the university course Finally, i believe that Westminister Univeristy offers a great class
experience with english speaking circumstances. Therefore, i decided to place my application for master degree program
here.

CAREER ASPIRATIONS / DEVELOPMENT PLAN

Please use the space below to tell us about your future plans. If you are applying for one of our fee award scholarships, tell
us about your career aspirations and how you plan to contribute to your chosen field in future. If you are an international
student from a developing country applying for a full scholarship, please provide a detailed outline of your development plan
and how you intend to use the knowledge and experience gained through the course to contribute towards the development
of your home country (500 words maximum).

English is one of the most popular subjects in the world including in Indonesia. Nonetheless, many students have difficulties
in learning English because the material and national curriculum provided at school are less organized in systematic and
structured lessons; thus it becomes a boring and frightening time to learn english for some students. The main problem faced
by the school students in Indonesia is not on the speaking section but understanding and using grammar correctly. For
example, students who did manage to absorb the categorization implicit in the terminology were likely to get confused
examining the part of speech of a sentence, sentence forms, language variation and many others though they can speak in
english well. All of this suggests something rotten in the state of grammar teaching which is rarely made precise how they
work.

By learning English language and Linguistics offered by The Westminister University, i will enrol in the subjects namely,
English Worldwide, Analyzing spoken and written discourse, Current developments in language teaching and other subjects,
which are applicable to: get cross-cultural understanding of English speaking country, analyse the mistakes of learning
english having been taught up to the present at school, explore TESOL issues which is applicable for english teacher and
teaching english. These are essential when working as a lecturer of STAIN Watampone, academician as i held the seminars,
practical sessions and workshops, then becoming national curriculum planner in the next ten year.

As far i am concerned about, the national curriculum of English in Indonesia adopts audio bilingual and behaviourism
approach which neglect the analysis of language. As a result, more students can speak but less can write. For this reason, i
plan to make a well-organized curriculum through the introduction of the detailed English which is appropriate for every
student’s grade with clear linkage, they are "parts of speech, subject predicate, sentence". Later, i choose to explore this
topic in my future graduate thesis.

Furthermore, i can get the global english learning in the global atmosphere with global partners, hence i can prepare and
influence at least my students and people around the regency of Watampone in the course place i am teaching now, Star
English to face the escalated level of economic challenges related to the global economic relationship, such as Asian Free
Trade Area (AFTA) by 2015 which requires english as their one trading language. Therefore, i can support Sulawesi Selatan
to compete without any problem in terms of communication among foreign competitor.

To conclude, my scholarship application in pursuing English Language and Linguistics program in United Kingdom is an
important step of my career to gain great insight about English language which i would share and develop in my college and
english course. The future objectives of mine in teaching program and reparation of education will help two main focuses of
Indonesia government current plans after all namely promoting quality of human resource and development of global
education.

FINANCIAL NEED
Please explain your level of financial need, including details of any other sources of funding you expect to receive and any
special circumstances affecting your need for financial assistance. If you are applying for any of our fee award scholarships,
please explain how you intend to cover the remaining expenses (300 words maximum). .

I come from a residential area namely Kampubbu in Watampone province, Sulawesi Selatan. I live in a middle-sized family,
my parents, one old brother and one little sister. My father’s job is farmer and my mother’s is housekeeper. None of them have
high school certificate, thus we are considered as low economic family in my country and i require a full scholarship to cover
my study.

The details of the financing i need during full-time study course at Westminister University are as follows:
Tuition fee : £11,500
Accommodation : £11,385
Flights : £1,492
Transportation : £1,440
Food : £1,920
Course essential : £480
Laundry : £240
Other needs : £872
Going out : £1,920
Visa : £150
Estimated total : £31,399

In addition to the details of financing needs that i have mentioned above, i also expect to get help in taking care of my tier 4
student visa which is approximately £150. I have difficulties to take care of it because it requires minimum £5,000 in my bank
account; meanwhile i do not have money as that much.

Up to the present, i do not have any financial support either from government or private sector of scholarships. Besides, my
family cannot support my study in UK financially in this case; therefore, the only hope for me is to obtain full scholarship
assistance provided by Westminister University until i can finish my course in the United Kingdom.
