CAMBRIDGE IGCSE™ CHEMISTRY: TEACHER’S RESOURCE

About the assessment

All learners will take three papers. Learners who are expected to reach the standard of grade D or below may
choose to study the Core content only. They can be entered for Papers 1, 3 and either Paper 5 or Paper 6.
This set of papers provides access to grades G to C.
Learners who are expected to reach the standard of grade C or above may choose to study the Supplement as
well as the Core. They can be entered for Papers 2, 4 and either Paper 5 or Paper 6. This set of papers provides
access to grades G to A*.
Papers 1 and 2 are multiple-choice papers, while Papers 3 and 4 are made up of structured questions, some
of which require extended answers. All four of these papers test Assessment Objective 1 (knowledge with
understanding) and Assessment Objective 2 (handling information and problem solving). Paper 5 is a hands-on
practical paper, while Paper 6 is an alternative to the practical paper that does not involve hands-on experiments.
Both Paper 5 and Paper 6 test Assessment Objective 3 (experimental skills and investigations). The questions on
both of these papers require learners to have had plenty of first-hand experience of laboratory techniques and
scientific enquiry procedures.
There is no choice of questions on any of the papers: they must all be answered. Some questions test the
mathematical skills listed in the syllabus, in the context of the learning objectives set out in the Subject content
part of the syllabus.
