Please read this manual thoroughly even though you may already be familiar with other Toyota industrial vehicles because it contains information which is exclusive to this series of vehicles The manual has been produced based on a standard vehicle. However, if you have questions ‘on other types, please contact your Toyota industrial vehicle dealer (Toyota dealer). In addition to this manual, please be sure to read the separate publication entitled “Operator's ‘Manual for Safety Operation”. This will give you 2 complete understanding of ‘Toyota industrial vehicles and permit you to operate them correctly and safely. Proper handling of new vehicles promotes performance and extends service life, Drive with special caution while becoming familiar with a new vehicle. In addition to the standard operating pro cedures, pay attention to the following safety items. noo2a1 Please acquire thorough knowledge on Toyota industrial vehicle. Read the opera- tor’s manual thoroughly prior to operating the vehicle. Get to know its operation and components. Learn about the safety devices and accessory equipment and their limits and precautions. Be sure to read the caution plate attached to the vehicle ‘ Please learn safe driving points and safety ‘management. Understand and maintain working area traffic rules. Do not operate the vehicle when an oil leak in the steering or brake system has been found. Operate the vehicle after adjusting and repairing. Operate the steer- ing wheel more firmly than usual OPS System (Torque converter models) The OPS (Operator Presence Sensing) system prevents traveling and load handling operations when the operator is not seated in the operator's seat. Confirm the functions of the OPS system before operation. ‘Travel OPS Functions If the operator leaves the seat while the vehicle is traveling, the OPS lamp will turn (on and the engine will be stopped. However, the OPS is not to be forced to stop its operations. Be sure to be seated during handling, If the OPS is activated while the vehicle is running on the slope, the power is turned off, then the vehicle slides backward. Be sure to operate the vehicle while sitting in the operator's seat. To release the motion stop, sit in the ‘operator's seat, return the shift lever to its neutral position, apply the parking brake, and start the engine. The OPS system will not be activated even when the operator leaves the operator's seat if the shift lever is in its neutral position OPS Controller Abnormality Warning In cither of the followirg. cases, stop ‘operation and have the OPS system inspected by your Toyota dealer. # The OPS lamp does not tun on when the operator leaves the operator's seat with the shift lever set in its forward or reverse position ‘© The OPS lamp does not turn off when the ‘engine is started even after the operator sits in the operator's seat (On diesel engine models, the OPS lamp may remain on during warth-up after a cold engine start. This does not indicate a malfunction.) CAUTION PLATES Caution plates are attached on a vehicle. Draw bar lever INSTRUMENTS sn0000 Integrated monitoring center Meter illumination lamp is provided for easy meter reading at night. It comes on when the light control switch is set 10 ON. 1, Hour meter 21 Engine ol pressure warning lamp 3. Sedimenter warning lamp (standard: Diesel engine models) 4, Pre-heater indicator lamp (standard: Diesel engine models) 5. Air cleaner warning lamp 6. Charge warning lamp 7. Water temperature gauge 8. Brake warning lamp 11, Neutral indicator (orque converter models) 12, Torque converter el temperature warring lamp (torque converter models) Checking procedure for blown warning, tamp bulb: Note ‘The glow indicator lamp lights for 2 seconds when the cooling water temperature is 70°C or Pall the Parking brake lever, turn the ignition switch to the ON position, and push the check switch on the right side of instrument panel. Please check if all warning lamps come on. Charge warning lamp Maio 1. This lamp comes on to indicate an atnor- rmality in the charging system while the engine is running 20 If normal, the lamp comes on wher the ignition switch is tamed on and goes off when the engine stars, 3. If the lamp comes on while the engine is running, stop the operation immediately, inspect the fan belt for cuts or loosening, adjust it, and restart the engire If the lamp does not go off, the charging system may be faulty. Please ask a Toyota dealer immediately for inspection and repair. 4 Engine oil pressure warning lamp 0791 1, Comes on to indicate low engine oil pres- sure while the engine is running. 2, If normal, the lamp comes on when the ignition switch is turned on and goes off when the engine starts. 3, If the lamp comes on while the engine is running, either the engine oil is insufficient ‘or the lubrication system is faulty. Stop the operation immediately and ask a Toyota dealer for inspection and repair. Note “The engine oil pressure warning lamp” dees not indicate the oil level. Check the oil evel using, the oil level gauge before starting work Fuel gauge neo391 Trdicates the fuel level in the fuel tank in the range of O-@- Iakes some time for the indication to be stabi lized after the fuel is supplied and the ignition switch is turned on. ‘Caution If the road is not level, attention must be ‘paid because the correct level may not be dicated. ‘© Add fuel carly when the indicator ap- ‘proachesO. ‘© In case of diesel in particular, be sure refuel it before it runs out because once it causes the engine to stop running it becomes: necessary to bleed air from the fuel supply system. Hour meter Only operates when the ignition switch is on It indicates the total number of vehicle operating hours. The unit of the rightmost digit is 1/10 hour, Please use this meter to grasp the timing for periodic maintenance and recozd the operat= ing hours. Water temperature gauge mosor Indicates the temperature of the engine cooling water. 1. Operates when the ignition switch is on. 2. In normal state, the indicator is in the sreen zone at the center. 3. Ifthe indicator js in the red zone, the engine may be overheated. Stop the vehicle in a safe place, ile the engine fora while, and stop the en gine when the indication falls 4. Temporary overheating may be caused by water leakage, insufficient engine coolant level, loosened fan belt or other abnormality in the cooling system. Inspect the cooling system, Glow indicator lamp (Diesel engine models) M0702 Indicates heating of glow plugs. 1, When the ignition switch is tured on, the lamp comes on and glow plug heating begins. The lamp goes off automatically when glow plug heating is complete. The engine will start easily once the glow plugs are heated. 2. The length of time the lamp remains on depends on the engine coolant temperature. When the engine is cold, it takes about 10 to 20 seconds. When the engine is still warm, the preheating is complete ina few seconds. Air cleaner warning lamp mei791 1. This lamp comes on when the air cleaner clement gets clogged during engine running. 2. If normal, the lamp comes on when the ignition switch is tumed on and goes off when the engine starts. Note When the OK monitor is provided, this lamp does not come on when the ignition switch is tured on. It functions the some way as the OK monitor. 3. If the lamp comes on while the engine is running, stop the engine and clean the ele ment and dust cup. For the cleaning method, refer to the Weekly Inspection Section. ‘Sedimenter warning lamp ‘Diesel engine models) mMi201 ‘The sedimenter is a device for separating water from the fuel 1. The warning lamp comes on to indicate Water in the sedinenter exceeds the pre- determined level while the engine is running. 2. If normal, the hmp comes on when the ignition switch is med on and gues oft when the engine starts. Note If the OK monitor is provided, the lamp does not come on when the ignition switch is turned on. If functions the same way as the OK monitor. 3. If the lamp comes on while the engine is running, drain water immediately. (See the self-service section for the draining method.) Caution Continued operation with the lamp on may cause seizure of the injection pump and pump damage. Brake warning lamp 1. The brake warning lamp comes on wien the parking brake is applied and goes off when itis released. 2. The brake waming lamp also comes on when the brake fluid level becomes low, Caution Always release the parking brake and con- firm that the warning lamp is off before starting the vehicle. Torque converter oil temperature warning lamp (Torque converter models) 1. The warning lamp is activated when the ignition switch is on: 2. The red warning lamp comes on when excessive load is detected during operation, Caution Always shift down to the Ist speed or stop the vehicle to cool down the torque con- verter oil when the warning lamp lights. Neutral indicator lamp (Torque converter models) 1. The green warning lamp lights while the gear is set to neutral. 2. The warning lamp comet on when the ignition switch is turned on under the nor- mal condition (the control lever is set to neutral), Speedometer wei201 ‘The speedcmeter indicates the speed of the vehicle in km/h. The odometer indicates the distance in km. lease operate the vehicle at a safe speed. ‘Odometer 1. The accumulated mileage is indicated in the km unit, 2. The right-most digit indicates in the 100- meter unit, Ammeter (Option) ‘The ammeter indicates the power generation status of the alternator. 1. The indicator goes to the “—” side when the ignition switch is turned on and slightly to the “+” side after the engine starts, 2. If the indicator is on the “—" side after the engine scarts, stop operation and have the vehicle inspected at service station since the fan belt may be slacken or broken or the power circuit faulty. 1. Odometer OPS Lamp (Torque converter models) When the operaior leaves the operator's seat, the OPS lamp (urns on and the engine is Stopped, Sit in the operator's seat, return the shift lever to its neural position, apply the parking brake ard star the engine Caution In cither of the following cases, the OPS system may be faulty. Park the vehicle in a safe location, and have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer. # The OPS lamp does not turn on when the operator leaves the operator's seat with the shift lever set in its forward or reverse position, # The OPS lamp does not turn off when the ‘engine is started even after the operator sits in the operator's seat. (On diesel engine models, the OPSS lamp may remain on during warm-up after a cold engine start. This does not indicate a malfunction.) SWITCHES AND LEVERS so Ignition switch sLo103 The ignition key is inserted with the teeth facing upward OFF... Engine stop position. Key insertion and withdrawal are performed in this pesi- tion, ‘ON... Engine opemttion position. Located fone position clockwise from the OFF posi- tion “The preheater is Heated before starting in the diesel model. START... Engine start position. Located ‘one position clockwise from the ON posi- tion. After engine start, release the key and it will return to the ON position automatically. In the torque converter model, the engine does not start unless the control lever is at the neutral position. Caution ‘Be sure to sit in the operator’s seat before ‘operating the ignition switch. Otherwise, the vehicle may start suddenly, causing an unexpected accideat. If the OPS lamp turns on, sit in the ‘operator's seat, return the shift lever to its neutral position, apply the parking brake, and start the engine. Make sure that the OPS indicator goes off. (Torque converter models) © Do not leave the switch in the ON post tion when the engine is stopped. It may cause over-discharge of the battery. © Do not tum the switch to the START position while the engine is running. This may damage the starter motor. (Except for USA specifications) ‘ For the sake of safety, it is recommended to always start the engine of a vehicle with the gear shift lever or the control lever shift cd in the neutral position. # Do not hold the switch is the START position for more than: 15 seconds for gasc- fine models. 30 seconds for diesel models. Return the switch to the OFF position and. ‘wait at least 20 seconds prior to attempting restart. «+ In case of the antixestart ignition switch (optionally available), be sure to shift the switch to the OFF position before attempt to start the engine again. “If the OPS lamp does not turn off when the engine is started after sitting in the operator's seat, the battery voltage may have dropped. Since the normal vehicle control may fail in this state, do not operate the vehicle until the OPS lamp turns off. If operation in this state is necessary, be sure to operate with utmost If the OPS lamp does not turn off approximately 1 to 2 minutes after engine start or when the engine is raced, stop operation and have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer. (Torque converter models) (On diesel engine models, the OPS. lamp may remain on during warm-up after a cold engine start. This does not indicate a ‘malfunction. ) Light control switch ‘The 3-way pull-out switch lights the follow= ing lamps at each position, Ist dnd 3rd Lamp position position position ead lamps ° atic with gg a Pukinglanps Caution Do not leave the head lamps or other lamps while the vehicle is not operated, Otherwise, the battery is discharged and the engine will not be started, Hor bution sLaso. Press the button in the center of the steering wheel to sound the hom. The horn will sound even when the ignition switch is off. ‘Tum signal switch Pressing or pulling the turn signal switch ‘flashes the turn signal lamps. “Turning to the left Press the switch forward, ‘Toming to the right... Pull the switch toward the driver. ‘The turn signal switch operates normally ‘even if the ignition switch is OFF Gear shift lever (Clutch models) Four forward positions and one reverse posi- tion. Press the clutch pedal all the way down and change the gear settings according to the sequence shown in the shift pattern. Caution Always stop the vehicle when shifting from forward to reverse or vise versa. 1. Left ura 2. Right turn Shift lever (Torque conver sr models) ‘The 3speed full-automatic transmission is equipped Functions: R_ Reverse ... Moves the vehicle backward, N Neutral ...Set the lever at neutral and start the engine. D Drive... Lever position for normal operation. 2 Second ...Lever position when the engine brake is needed, L_ Low... Lever position when the engine brake must be activated. Caution The neutral safety switch is equipped for safety. The engine starts only when the lever is sot to neutral. Note © Traveling is impossible if the operator sits in the operator's seat while the shift lever is set in its forward or reverse position. Be sure to return the shift lever to its neutral position once and then set it in its forward or reverse position. ® Once the OPS system is activated, sit in the operator's seat, return the accelerator pedal and the shift lever to their neutral Positions, apply the parking brake and start the engine, Parking brake lever suo Hold the lever grip and pull the lever fully toward you to apply the parking brake. To release the parking brake, push the lever forward with the palm on the grip. While ‘operating the parking brake lever, keep the brake pedal fully depressed. Caution ¢ Never hold the lever at other than the grip because a finger may be pinched. ‘When releasing the parking brake by holding the lever for starting on a slope for example, hold the grip at above the protrusion. © When parking on 2 slope, apply wheel cchocks to the wheels, © Traveling without releasing the brake will spoil the brake performance. Tilt steering adjustment sLisor 1. The steering wheel position may be ad- justed back and forth while the tilt steering adjust lever is kept lowered. 2. Raising the lever at the proper position fixes the steering wheel at that position, 3. After the adjustment, try to move the steering wheel back and forth to see that it is fixed. Caution The steering wheel position must be adjust- ed before starting the vehicle. Adjustancnt. during traveling must be avoided, Grip Protrusion ‘Tit steering BODY COMPONENTS sco Operator’s seat “The seat position can be adjusted either forward or backward while the adjust lever is pulled to the right. Always make adjustment before running the vehicle. After the adjustment, shake the seat a little to check sure fixing. Caution A proximity switch prevents traveling operation unless the operator sits in the operator's seat. Be sure to sit in the operator's seat before performing any operation. Otherwise, the OPS system may malfunction. (Torque converter models) ‘Suspension seat (Option) peo. ‘Adjusting the pointer on the weight scale to the ‘operator's weight to obtain the most comfortable suspension matching the operaor’s weight. Tum the adjusting bolt clockwise or counterclockwise to move the pointer in the direction toward a heavier or lighter weight, respectively. The seat position can be adjusted either forward or backward while the adjust lever is pulled to the Fight, Always make adjustment before running the vehicle. After the adjustment, shake the seat a lite to check sure fixing. Caution A proximity switch prevents traveling operation unless the operator sits in the operator's seat. Be sure to sit in the operator's seat before performing any operation. Otherwise, the OPS system may malfunction. (Torque converter models) ‘An operator's manual and operator's manual for safety operation are located on the rear side of the seat. Make sure to open the seat back pocket with both hands. If your truck does not have an operator's manual and operator's manual for safety operation, please contact (your authorized ‘Toyota Dealer) to obtain copies for your ruck. Adjust lever Adjust over Adjust knob Engine hood Opening 1. The engine hood is unlocked when the engine hood lock release lever on the lower left side ofthe tlt steering adjustment lever is pulled toward the operator. 2, Hold the engine hood using the clearance underneath , and raise it 3. Fully open the engine hood and release it after checking sure locking of the hood damper Tock, Closing Press the lock release botton of the damper stay and close the engine hood. Holding the hood ntl it is locked to the position with a checking sound. Caution Operating the vehicle without firm locking of the engine hood is very dangerous. Be sure to check firm locking before operating the vehidle. Draw bar The towing bar can be easily connected or disconnected from the driver's seat. Pulling the lever.... Disconnects the towing bar. Releasing the lever.... Connects the towing bar, ‘Connect the wire rope or towing bar firmly. Use a sufficiently tough wire rope or towing bar according to the size and weight of the towing load, Caution 1. Confirm firm connection before towing operation. 2 Always disconnect the load after the Vehicle has come to the complete stop. 3. Be careful not to injure your hands during Connection or disconnection of the wire rope or towing bar. Also check if antifreezer is required, Engine ‘Check for low oil level, dirty oll, Faulty oil viscosity and abnormal sound and exhaust. Brake pedal ‘Check for excessive play and low brake efficiency. Brake fluid Check for low fluid level Parking brake (Check for operating force and braking effect. ‘Steering wheel Check for excessive looseness, play, vibration and veering, “Hora Gheck for non-sounding Instruments Check for faulty operation Fuel Check for low fuel level ‘Check for disengagement and excessive play. ‘Check for low fluid level. WALKAROUND INSPECTION xeo0o Vehicle uprightness Does the vehicle lean to one side or the other? If 50, check for a tire puncture or a problem with the undercarriage, Tire inspection Ex0201 Tire inflation pressure 1. Use a tire pressure gauge and measure the inflation pressure, Adjust it to the pro- per level ‘See the service data section for the proper inflation pressure, # Do not raise the pressure beyond the pro: per level. 2. After the adjustment, check if air is not leaking from the valve. ‘Damage, crack and wear of tires and rims Check the tires for damage and wear, and the rims for bending. If the tires are damaged, or there is a marked difference in the wear. ing of tires between the front and rear ot between the left and right is perceived, or bent rims are found, ask a Toyota dealer for insception Hub nut inspection Exoto1 Check the tightness of the hub nuts. Avoid unevent torque and tighten all of the nuts uniformly, Refer to service data for Proper torque. ‘Beneath the vehicle Ex.0201 Check for any oil or water leakage on the round or floor where the vehicle was park- ed. Check for loose parts or damage. If any unusual condition is found, have the vehicle inspected at a Toyota dealer. Lamp inspection Ex 05.0) Are the filaments intact? Is there any lens damage? Always keep the lenses clean to insure pro: per forward vision. Rearview mirror inspection Clean the rearview mirrors and set them at appropriate angles. (Front) (Rear) License plate inspection Clean the license plate so that the letters can be read easily, ENGINE COMPARTMENT INSPECTION tcoooo Inspect the coolant level and replenish the coolant while it is cool 1, Open the engine hood and inspect the coolant Jevel in the reservoir tank. Note ‘The reservoir tank is provided to the radia tor, which automatically supplies coolant when the coolant level in the radiator be- comes low, 2. The coolant level must be between the upper and lower limits. If the coolant is lower than the lower limit, check for leakage from the cooling system and replenish coolant to the upper limit, 3. Use 30% dilution of Long-Life Coolant (50% in winter) Note If there is no coolant in the reservoir tank, make sure to check the coolant level in the radiator. Inspection procedure of coolant level in radiator: 1. Open the engine hood. 2, Remove the cap and check the coolant level from the coolant inlet 3. If the coolant surface cannot be seen from the coolant inlet, add water (soft water) up to the lower edge of the inlet, Note When the vehicle is operated after adding ‘water up to the lower edge of the inlet, the water level reduces which is not a problem. To close the cap, align the pawl on the reverse side ofthe cap with the cutout in the inlet, press land turn clockwise for finger tight. Caution ‘To remove the cap while the engine is hot is dangerous. Always begin inspection after the engine has cooled. Brake fluid inspection 1. Check the reservoir tank for low brake fluid level 2. If tis low, replenish the brake fluid (SAE 3.1703, DOT-3). Caution 1. If the brake fluid is consumed to soon, the brake system may leak, Have the vehicle inspected at a service station. 2. ‘Never use oil other than brake fluid, 3. Make sure not to let dust invade inside the reservoir tank. 4. Be careful that the small ventilation hole in the reservoir cap is not clogged by dirt and dust. Clutch fluid inspection 1. Remove the reservoir cap and check the reservoir tank for low clutch fluid level, 2. If itis low, replenish the brake fluid (SAE 341703, DOT-3).. Caution 1. If the clutch fluid is consumed to soon, the clutch system may leak. Have the vehicle inspected at a service station, 2. Never use oil other than brake fluid, 3. Make sure not to let dust invade inside ‘the reservoir tank. 4. Be careful that the small ventilation hole fn the reservoir cap is not clogged by dit and dust. Engine oil inspection 1. Park the vehicle on a flat ground. If the vehicle is inclined, the indicated level may be incorrect. 2. The oil level must be checked before starting the engine or at least 3 minutes after the engine is stopped. 3. Extract the oil level gauge and wipe it with clean cloth.
