The combined inductance of two coils connected in a series is 0.6 H and 0.1 H,
depending on the relative directions of the currents in coils. If one of the coils, when
isolated, has a self-inductance of 0.2 H, then calculate the mutual inductance?

Detailed Solution
When two coils are connected in series additive polarity, the equivalent inductance is
Logi = by + la + 2M
When two coils are connected in series opposite polarity, the equivalent inductance is
Lega = Li + 2-2M
Where L; and Lz are self-inductances of the coils
Mis the mutual inductance
Calculation:
Given that, Logi = 0.6 H, Legg = 0.1 H, Ly = 0.2H
For additive polarity, 0.6 = 0.2 + Ly + 2M
For opposite polarity, 0.1 = 0.2 + Ly- 2M
By solving the above two equations,
we get Lp = 0.15 H, M = 0.125 H
