 ARTIST’S BACKGROUND
Alfredo Esquillo Jr was born in 1972 in Manila and studied painting at the University of Santo Tomas. Painting has
remained a hallmark of his career since then, even being incorporated into his more recent works, better described as
assemblages or installations. Esquillo was highly influenced by magic realism' artists and Filipino social realists early in his
career, but as his practice evolved, he widened his themes to more politicized investigations of his nation's contemporary
and historical events.
 NATURE
The paintings and installations are inspired by the daily and social events of modern Filipino life.
 EVERYDAY LIFE
The work depicts the maze-like consciousness of Filipinos both then and now. It describes how smoking, drugs, and other
things can divert a person from their aim.
 SOCIETY, POLITICS, ECONOMY, AND HISTORY
Alfredo Esquillo's Daang Ligid Krus, created in 1996, is a contemporary art that narrates icons that appear at every turn,
with religious symbolism mocked by violence and obstruction lining the route. Daang Ligid Krus illustrates the many
lifestyles of people in a religious community and one's social adventures.
 MODE OF RECEPTION
Daang Lingid Kruz can be seen at Ayala Museum. It makes us reconsider the positions and lives of people with opposing
views. “DAANG LIGID KRUS”
