1st Quarter Examination of 21st Century Literature from the Philippines and the World

(REVIEWER)
Prevalent – means generally or widely accepted/ popular.
Literature- covers both oral and written forms of works for expressive and imaginative purposes.
Religion and morality- is the most likely the theme of literary text during early Spanish period?
Climax- the turning point in a story.
Fiction- a product of the writer's wild imagination and creative thinking where the characters react to the conflict and
various issues central to the main idea of a literary work.
Examples are: short story, novel, and novella. The main genres are crime, fantasy, romance, science fiction, western,
inspirational, historical fiction and horror.
Non-fiction- stories inspired by real events where the writers aim to present, interpret, or describe experiences based on
facts. Examples are essays, journals, diaries, feature articles, editorials.
Epic- type of a long narrative poem mainly focusing on the heroic achievements and deeds of the main character.
Legends- a form of prose which deal with the origin of a thing, location or name.
Folk Tales- stories which can be characterized as anonymous, timeless, and placeless tales circulated orally among a
group of people.
Myths- usually have supernatural powers where the main purpose is to provide explanation about the existence of
something or someone. Example is The Cycle of the Sun and the Moon.
Prose- this literary piece applies a natural flow of speech and grammatical structures which are mainly consisting of
complete sentences arranged logically and sequentially in a paragraph form.
Setting- the time and place in which a story is told.
Character- a person, animal, or being within a story.
Plot- a series of causes-and-effects which shape the story as a whole
Theme- the underlying meaning of a story.
Sergio Osmeña Sr.- was appointed as the President of the Philippines during the Japanese period.
Doctrina Cristiana- first book printed in the Philippines.
Florante at Laura- the most famous metrical romance in the Philippines.
Muslims portrayed in Moro-Moro literature according to the critical review written by Paz Verdades M. Santos as Immoral and warlike.
Technology- was the great influenced the 21st century literary forms.
Blog- also known as web log or a website containing short articles called posts that are changed regularly.
Chick Lit- This genre fiction addresses issues of modern womanhood, often humorously and light-heartedly.
Creative Nonfiction- o known as literary nonfiction or narrative nonfiction, it is a genre of writing that uses literary styles
and techniques to create factually accurate narratives.
Flash Fiction- characterized with a style of fictional literature or fiction of extreme brevity.
Hyperpoetry- a form of digital poetry that uses links using hypertext mark-up.
Mobile Phone Text Tula- A particular example of this poem is a tanaga, a type of Filipino poem, consisting of four lines
with seven syllables each with the same rhyme at the end of each line.
Speculative Fiction- This is an umbrella term encompassing the more fantastical fiction genres, specifically science
fiction, fantasy, horror, weird fiction, supernatural fiction, superhero fiction.
The Rosales Saga - 5-novel series written by F. Sionil Jose has been internationally acclaimed and has been translated in more than
20 languages.
Oppression, religion, and freedom- three most influenced in the type of our literature during colonial period of Spanish, American, and
Japanese.
Function of narrative poetry- It tells story and has the elements such as characters, setting, conflict, etc.
CHARACTERISTICS OF 21ST CENTURY LITERATURE
-written by contemporary authors within the last decade.
-deals with current issues and themes -reflects technological culture.
-literature of emerging genres.
-often breaks traditional writing.
Cultural conflicts and military policies- greatly contribute to the conflict in Mindanao.
Imitative and informal- best describes the type of education during pre-colonial period?
Contemporary period- best associated with the post-colonial period.
Daily encounters and activities in life- this theme was prevalent in pre-colonial literature.
