Typewriter Functions
Typewriter Functions
TYPEWHEEL
-a wheel made with raised characters on its periphery and used in some typewriters, printing
telegraphs, and other printing devices.
4.TYPE LEVER
-The metal bar to the left side of a typewriter. It returns the carriage to the starting position of a
new line.
-a mechanism on a typewriter that works both automatically and manually to reverse the
direction of travel of the ribbon.
7.FEED ROLLER
8.PLATEN KNOB
-lever at the end that releases the carriage so it can be manually moved by hand
CARRIAGE RETURN/HANDLE:
-In addition to returning the carriage to the starting position, it advances the rubber platen to
the next line based on the line height you have set up. (i.e. Single, double, triple) Remember the roller
advances at 1/2 line increments
10.DECAL
-a picture, design, or label made to be transferred (as to glass) from specially prepared paper.
-a device behind the printing point indicator of a typewriter that carries the ribbon and raises it
into printing position each time a character key is struck.
12PAPER TABLE
-a tilted shelf at the back of the platen of a typewriter for supporting the paper.
13PLATEN
14PAPER FINGER
-Paper fingers allow the user to roll in paper and start typing, without having to worry about
tucking anything in. The downside to this, is sometimes the page bows in the middle, creating a
megaphonic shape that amplified the sound of the keystrokes, and the sound of slapping paper.
15RIBBON SPOOL
-RIBBON SPOOL/SPINDLE: Inked ribbons are wound around a spool and placed on two spindles.
Most typewriters have a combination black/red ribbon, but not all. The spindles are able to move in
either direction so that once you get to the end of your spool, you flip a lever and the spools will reverse
directions.
16TYPEBARS
-the metal arms that move when a key is depressed, so that the head strikes the ribbon,
imprinting the character onto the paper
KEYTOP
-is a small plastic cover placed over the keyswitch of a computer keyboard. Keycaps are often
illustrated to indicate the key function or alphanumeric character they correspond to.
1. SHIFT KEY
-The Shift key ⇧ Shift is a modifier key on a keyboard, used to type capital letters and other
alternate "upper" characters. There are typically two shift keys, on the left and right sides of the row
below the home row.
