Introduction
Our topic is about study to determine social media addiction that can effect to the
academic performance of grade-11 students in Ternate Integrated National High
School school year 2023 -2024.

This actively demonstrates that some students are addicted to social media that
may distract their academic performance. Some of the students of Grade – 11
HUMSS in Ternate Integrated National High School uses social media to answer some
of their activities instead of using their own knowledge.

This research is Quantitative, our target respondents are Grade 11: Humanities and
Social Sciences (HUMSS) of Senior High School Students in Ternate Integrated
National High School.

For the purpose of this study, “social media” shall be construed as any website or
mobile application that enables users to communicate with one another regardless of
their physical location. Any use of social media that impairs one’s ability to go about
everyday activities, accomplish tasks, maintain relationships, or suffer from
psychological impairments is referred to as “social media addiction” or “excessive
usage”.

Our research is important, the particular reason for this circumstance is that
everyone will benefit because they will know how to control their social media
addiction.

In recent years, social media addiction has had a significant impact on pupils’
academic performance. For students in a variety of areas, these networks present
both opportunities and risks in plenty. We developed this study because of social
media addiction and its effects on students’. The goal of the study is to investigate
the relation between Grade – 11 HUMSS students at Ternate Integrated National
Highschool.

Social media addiction is an unhealthy dependence on interactive platforms such as

Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, and
any other sharing platform that allows interaction through text or photos. Social
media addiction manifest as overuse and difficult in abstraining. However, social
media addiction can also negatively affect teens, distracting them and disturbing their
sleep.

Social media addiction has been around for a while, but it really took off and
developed when the virus or disease known as COVID-19 entered our country.
Because of our prolonged isolation and the resulting agitation, social media addiction
has become so pervasive that it might interfere with students’ academic
performance.

Statement of The Problem

This study aims to investigate how social media addiction affects senior high school
students from HUMSS's conduct in Ternate Integrated National High School during
the 2023–2024 academic year.

The objectives of this study are to answer the inquiries that follow:
1. How long has the students been using social media?
2. What are the possible behaviors of students from the usage of social media?
3. What conclusions or inferences may be drawn about the impact of social media
addiction on the students' behavior in light of the findings?
4. What specific advice may be given to the students regarding their problem with
social media addiction?
Significance of The Study
The following people can benefit from this research:

The Students. This study will give awareness to student on the effects of social media
addiction on their behavior. Moreover, they can be enlightened and may practice
using social media in a responsible way.

The Parents. This study will help the parents to understand why their children are
being addicted to social media. Through this study, they can formulate some
preventive measure to help their children not to use social media frequently.

Co-researchers. This study can help co-researchers to receive research ideas and
information. Also, the findings of this study can be beneficial for them as they go on
with their research.

Future researchers. This study may benefit future researchers since this will serve as
blueprint for their future researches. Also, it gives them the necessary
recommendations in improving their study from the information and data being
gathered by this research.

Scope and Delimitation

This study primarily focused on the social media usage histories and behavioral
effects of Grade 11 HUMSS students at Ternate Integrated National Highschool
during the school year 2022-2023.
The only social media experience the students had was confined to the specific
platforms they used, such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat,
LinkedIn, and Twitter, as well as how frequently they used each one. Also, the only
behaviors of SHS HUMSS students that social media has an impact on are their
procrastination, sadness, and retreat from interpersonal connections.

Conceptual Framework
This conceptual framework will go over the connection between social media
addiction and social media disorders among grade 11-HUMSS students at TINHS. The
study's input-process-output (IPO) model is depicted in the research paradigm below.

Theoretical Framework
In an article on Internet Addiction Disorder, aka. IAD, Yuan et.al (2011) discusses
IAD being associated with structural abnormalities in the brains gray matter. Using a
voxel-based morphometric technique, the researchers were able to find multiple
structural changes of the brain in IAD subjects. They were able to confirm that long-
term Internet addiction would result in brain structural alterations. There were also
images captured of the brain matter of IAD subject with a 3T Siemens scanner,
capturing reduced gray matter volumes. In the article the researchers refer to IAD as
a now common mental health problem, stating that though not being commonly
used as a term, IAD indeed has attracted the attention of psychiatrists and the public.
According to Yuan et.al (2011), also discusses the hazards of a strong Internet
addiction, talking about its dangers of negatively affecting an individual’s
psychological well-being, contributing to academic failure and making way for
reduced work performance. The article also refers to other similar researchers like
Dong et al. (2010) whose research also has proven that IAD subjects show less
efficiency in information processing and have lower cognitive control.
The problem that lays in IAD not yet being fully accepted as a term and a disorder is
that there unfortunately, currently is no standardized treatment for IAD and that the
longer an individual doesn’t get treatment the worse off he can get, in the context of
the disorder becoming more aggressive with time. There are nevertheless
possibilities of studying IAD further on and at a higher level than before, as advances
in neuroimaging techniques have been made, that provide researchers’ with ideal
methods to investigate brain activity and its changes. There is an importance of IAD
still being in need to be researched in much greater detail (Dong et al. 2010).
Although social media facilitates flexible learning, encourages creative thinking, and
strengthens interpersonal relationships among students, these tools may also distract
students from their studies, lessen their opportunities for in-person social interaction,
and even develop an addictive quality. Students' social conduct and academic
practices have changed in shape and structure as a result of their excessive usage of
social media tools. Given how many students use social media networking sites on a
regular basis, it is imperative to examine the extent to which social media is affecting
pupils. As a result, the goal of this study is to draw conclusions about how social
media addiction affects the actions of grades 11 HUMSS students at TINHS.

Conceptual Paradigm
If we look at the causes of young as more people become dependent on social media,
we can see that the emotional condition is one of the primary causes. gloominess,
timidity, anxiety, poor communication abilities, Fear, social anxiety, and concern for
the future the world may be the cause or of their own utilizing social media (Gunuc,
2009). The concern that adolescents won't gain social life acceptance, suppression of
feeling the need to express them, the thrill of forming a group by demonstrating
an effort to develop unique individual identity and a propensity to congregate around
a only purpose: to get away from the mental pain and the urge for distraction leads
to youth adults are frequently found in virtual worlds.
environments.
The researchers will also discuss their examination of how Grade 11 HUMSS students
perceive the impacts of social media addiction and how it may impair those students'
academic performance at Ternate Integrated National Highschool (TINHS).

Theoretical Paradigm

Uses and gratifications theory. Uses and Gratifications

Theory was created in the
1940s, when researchers began to look into why certain
people chose to get their information
from certain forms or genres of media over others. The
theory states that people are motivated to
seek out forms of media to satisfy their psychological and
social needs (West & Turner, 2007).

Differential impact hypothesis. While there is support for

the individual impact
hypothesis, So also introduces this hypothesis as another
explanation of media usage. Similarly
to the individual impact hypothesis, this hypothesis also
acknowledges the two components of
personal risk and social risk. However, this hypothesis
recognizes that the perceivable risk may
be impacted by the media itself (So, 2012).
